On August 22, 2025, President Trump announced on his social media platform, “Truth Social,” that he has nominated White House official Sergio Gor to be the next U.S. Ambassador to India and has appointed him as the Special Envoy for South Asia and Central Asia.
Trump praised Gor’s achievements as the Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office in recruiting talent for the federal government, stating, “We have filled 95% of the positions across various departments and agencies.”
“Sergio will continue to serve in the White House in his current position until confirmed,” Trump added.
Trump also emphasized that Gor is his friend, stating, “For the most populous region in the world, I need someone I can trust completely to implement my agenda and help us ‘Make America Great Again!'”
The recent tensions between the U.S. and India over trade and tariffs will likely pose challenges for the 38-year-old Gor.
India has been a focal point of Trump’s trade agenda. Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with Indian Prime Minister Modi for continuing to purchase Russian oil during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Despite having a good relationship previously, Modi was one of the first national leaders to visit the White House during Trump’s second term.
Starting from August 27, the Trump administration will impose a 50% tariff on India, including a 25% punitive tariff for India’s purchase of oil from Russia.
The bilateral trade between the U.S. and India exceeds $190 billion annually.
Gor expressed gratitude for Trump’s nomination on the social media platform X, stating that representing the U.S. in his new position will be “the honor of my life.”
