Trump nominates State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert as Deputy UN Ambassador.

On August 10, 2025, U.S. President Trump announced on Saturday, August 9, that he has nominated State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce to serve as the Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations.

Bruce has been serving as the State Department spokesperson since March 2025, hosting daily press briefings and conveying the U.S. foreign policy positions to the public. Her professional background includes years of experience in media work and political commentary, as well as holding related positions in Congress and public policy fields.

The White House has not yet disclosed the specific nomination documents. According to U.S. law, the appointment of the Deputy Representative to the United Nations requires confirmation by the Senate. This position typically assists the Ambassador in dealing with multilateral diplomatic affairs within the United Nations, including participating in Security Council meetings, advancing U.S. policy priorities at the United Nations, and coordinating cooperation with representatives from other member countries.

In a brief statement, Trump mentioned that he will formally submit Bruce’s nomination for Senate review. The State Department has not provided further clarification on this personnel change.

According to reports by Reuters, Bruce is one of the many personnel nominations within the diplomatic system made by the Trump administration this year. In July, Trump had already nominated several senior diplomatic and defense officials, including the Deputy Representative to NATO and the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

The U.S. Mission to the United Nations is an important institution for U.S. multilateral diplomacy, responsible for making statements in the Security Council, promoting resolution drafts, and negotiating issues related to international security, humanitarian aid, economic sanctions, and more. The Deputy Representative steps in for the Ambassador in their absence to represent the United States at meetings and deliver speeches.

As of now, the U.S. Mission to the United Nations has been led by the acting Ambassador Dorothy Camille Shea, appointed by the Trump administration in January 2025. Trump has nominated former Federal Congressman Mike Waltz to serve as the official Ambassador, pending confirmation by the full Senate.
