On Friday, November 22, Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, announced his nomination of Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer from Oregon as the Secretary of Labor.
In his statement, Trump expressed that Chavez-DeRemer has dedicated herself to working tirelessly in collaboration with the business and labor sectors to build a robust American workforce and support the livelihoods of the American people. Trump wrote, “I look forward to working with her to create more opportunities for American workers, expand training and apprenticeship programs, raise wage levels, improve working conditions, and bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States.”
“We will jointly achieve a historic collaboration between businesses and labor to rebuild the American Dream for working families.”
Trump wrote, “Lori’s strong support in both the business and labor sectors will ensure that the Department of Labor can unite Americans from all walks of life to support our agenda, achieve unprecedented success – making America wealthier, stronger, more prosperous, and more powerful than ever before!”
At the end of his statement, Trump introduced her background.
Chavez-DeRemer began her political career in 2002 when she joined the Happy Valley Parks Committee and helped create the Happy Valley Independence Day Celebration. Subsequently, she was successfully elected as a Happy Valley City Councilor and became the City Council President. In 2010, she was elected as the Mayor, becoming the first Latina female Mayor of the city, and was re-elected in 2014.
Chavez-DeRemer was first elected as a federal congresswoman in 2022, becoming the first female Republican congresswoman in Oregon. She is also a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
She serves the 5th District of Oregon, which includes parts of Linn County, Clackamas County, Deschutes County, Multnomah County, and Marion County.
However, she was defeated by Democratic challenger Janelle Bynum in the recent congressional election.
At 56 years old, Chavez-DeRemer is a mother and successful businesswoman. She is married to her high school sweetheart, Dr. Shawn Deremer, and they have twin daughters together. They co-founded an anesthesia management company and opened multiple medical clinics in the Pacific Northwest region.
