On Thursday, September 25, 2025, US President Trump (Trump) announced that starting from October 1, the United States will impose a 100% tariff on imported drugs, a 50% tariff on kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and tariffs of 30% and 25% on soft cushion furniture and heavy trucks, respectively.
Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that starting from October 1, 2025, “we will impose a 100% tariff on any brand or patented drugs, excluding companies building drug manufacturing facilities in the US.”
He added that companies that have already started construction or are in the process of building pharmaceutical plants in the US may be exempted from these tariffs.
In July, Trump mentioned his plans to announce new tariffs on drugs, suggesting starting with lower rates and gradually increasing them to give pharmaceutical companies time to transition their operations to the US. However, he later warned of imposing tariffs as high as 250% on imported drugs.
For months, Trump has promised to impose tariffs on imported drugs, believing that tariffs are a means to compel pharmaceutical companies to increase domestic production in the US and strengthen the supply chain for critical drugs.
Furthermore, Trump stated that imposing tariffs would help fulfill his commitment to lowering drug prices.
Pharmaceutical companies have started taking Trump’s pressure on tariff issues seriously and announced investments of billions of dollars over the next few years to construct or expand production facilities in the US.
On Thursday, Trump also announced a 25% tariff on heavy trucks, pointing out that foreign-made heavy trucks and components are harming domestic manufacturers in the US who need protection.
“We need our truck drivers to be economically healthy and strong for many reasons, but most importantly for national security purposes!” Trump wrote in the post.
The Trump administration has already imposed new tariff rates on imported steel, aluminum, copper, and automotive products.
Trump also stated that the US government will impose a 50% tariff on all kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, and related products, and a 30% tariff on soft cushion furniture, with these measures also going into effect from October 1.
“This is because other countries have been allowing these products to ‘flood’ into the US. This is a very unfair practice, but for reasons of national security and other considerations, we must protect our manufacturing industry,” Trump explained in his post.
