On June 24, 2025, US President Trump announced that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran had officially taken effect, urging both sides not to disrupt it. The ceasefire came into effect after Iran had launched multiple missile attacks, forcing Israel to close its airspace, but both sides now seem to have returned to restraint, with Israel’s airspace reopened.
The 12-day conflict has temporarily come to a halt with the efforts of various parties, but there are still differences in interpretation regarding the details of the ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized that all war objectives had been achieved, with results exceeding expectations, including the destruction of Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities, control over Iranian airspace, significant damage to Iran’s military leadership, and the destruction of dozens of key targets.
Netanyahu stated that following the “enormous success” in military operations, Israel decided to accept President Trump’s proposed bilateral ceasefire agreement.
On the Iranian side, official media channels stated they had “forced the enemy to cease fire,” but Iran’s Foreign Minister emphasized that the ceasefire’s condition was for Israel to stop its “illegal aggression.” Despite the ceasefire, both sides continued to launch missiles at each other, causing casualties, highlighting the ongoing tension in the region.
According to an earlier statement from Trump on social media, the ceasefire was set to commence around 00:00 Eastern Time on Tuesday, June 24. However, before the ceasefire deadline, Israel carried out airstrikes in Gilan province in northwestern Iran, resulting in at least 9 deaths and 33 injuries.
Iran, on the other hand, conducted multiple rounds of missile attacks from late Monday to early Tuesday morning, surpassing Trump’s announced ceasefire deadline. Israel experienced air raid sirens in various cities nationwide, with the southern city of Beersheba being hit, resulting in at least 4 deaths.
As a result, Israel temporarily closed its airspace until reopening it later on Tuesday.
Currently, the Iranian government has not directly responded to Israel’s official statements and has not specified how long the ceasefire will last. Despite the ceasefire being in effect, missile attacks from Iran continued, suggesting that there is not complete agreement between the two sides on the definition and understanding of “ceasefire.”
Before the ceasefire, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi posted on social media platform X, stating: “So far, there is no agreement on ‘ceasefire’ or ‘halt to military operations’.”
However, he later added: “But if the Israeli regime ceases its illegal aggression against the Iranian people by 4 AM Tehran time at the latest, we will not respond after that.”
He emphasized that Iran would later decide whether to formally end military operations.
Semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim briefly mentioned on their Telegram channel that the ceasefire had entered the “implementation phase.” State-owned Press TV used strong language, stating that the ceasefire was implemented after conducting four rounds of attacks on Israeli occupied territory.
The ceasefire was made possible with the United States playing a crucial role. According to White House officials, Trump proposed the ceasefire after a conversation with Netanyahu, with the condition that Iran refrains from further attacks. Israel agreed to Trump’s mediation after confirming the completion of its military mission.
The White House stated that key figures, including Vice President Vance, Secretary of State Rubio, and US envoy Witkoff, were in direct or indirect contact with Iran to assist in reaching the agreement.
Regarding strategic outcomes, the US emphasized that with American support, Israel had “destroyed Iran’s capacity to produce nuclear weapons.” Vance, in an interview with Fox News, stated: “Iran was very close to having nuclear weapons, but now they cannot manufacture them with existing equipment as the facilities have been destroyed.”
Trump referred to this conflict as the “12-Day War.” In an earlier post on Monday evening, he mentioned that both Israel and Iran had sought his assistance almost simultaneously, expressing a desire for peace.
In his statement, Trump wrote: “The true winners are the world and the Middle East. The futures of both countries will be filled with love, peace, and prosperity.”
