On New Year’s Eve, watching the descent of the crystal ball in Times Square has always been a traditional way for locals and tourists to celebrate the arrival of the new year. On Monday, November 24th, the 2026 New Year’s crystal ball made its dazzling debut. This new generation crystal ball is the largest one to date, with the crystal count being double that of its predecessor.
According to the organizers, the 2026 New Year’s crystal ball is the ninth generation. It has a diameter of 12.5 feet and weighs 12,350 pounds, comprised of 5,280 Waterford crystals and LED lights. Additionally, this year’s crystal ball features round crystals instead of the triangular ones used before, with each crystal displaying unique patterns and cut into three different sizes. The crystal manufacturer Waterford stated that these variations will embody different themes such as “infinite joy, infinite brightness, and infinite beginnings.”
“Every cut and curve embodies the balance between reflection and renewal,” Waterford said in a statement, “showcasing the spirit of infinite possibilities as we come together to usher in the new year.”
The organizers mentioned that the previous crystal ball has retired and will be showcased as part of the new immersive experience program called “Times Travel,” set to open in 2026.
“The expansion of access to the crystal ball represents the true essence of New York City,” said Julie Coker, President and CEO of NYC & Company, “The crystal ball is not just a focal point on New Year’s Eve but will also serve as a bridge throughout the year to experience the charm of our city.”
The New Year’s Eve crystal ball dropping ceremony at Times Square started back in 1907. Since then, this ritual has become a tradition celebrated by people from all over the world. Gathered from various places, people flock to New York City at the end of December, arriving at Times Square on the evening of December 31st, the last day of the year.
At 11:59 PM, the crystal ball begins its slow descent, with the cheers of millions of people merging as they count down the final seconds, welcoming the new year filled with hope, challenges, change, and dreams.
