Tianjin woman reports married boyfriend to police, ends up in mental hospital.

Tianjin Ms. Hu met her ideal boyfriend through a dating app, but when she was preparing for marriage, she discovered that her boyfriend was already married. She reported the situation to the police, but on her way back home, she was forcibly taken to a mental hospital by several strangers. The response given by the local authorities left everyone shocked.

According to reports from Upstream News, Ms. Hu is a businesswoman who resides between Tianjin and Beijing. In September 2022, she met Wang from Anhui, who claimed to be single and unmarried, through a dating app. The two met offline in 2023 and started living together in Wang’s hometown of Wuwei City, Anhui Province, for two and a half years.

Ms. Hu described that after moving into Wang’s home, his parents and relatives claimed he was single, even though they had been living together as a couple. Wang claimed that he would receive payment for a project at the end of the year, so Ms. Hu bore most of the expenses during this period, including supporting Wang’s parents, totaling over 400,000 yuan.

In June 2024, when they discussed marriage, Ms. Hu discovered that Wang was not only married but also had a son. This news came as a shock to her. After learning the truth, she repeatedly asked Wang to break up and return the money she had spent. Initially, Wang made excuses, but later he blocked all contact with Ms. Hu.

Ms. Hu later contacted authorities in Qingdao to ask Wang to separate and return her belongings. However, their communication was fruitless. Subsequently, Ms. Hu reported the case to the police for fraud and bigamy, providing relevant evidence.

After reporting the case, Ms. Hu waited for the authorities to take action. Unexpectedly, in early March 2025, on her way back from Anhui to Beijing, she was intercepted and taken to a mental hospital.

Ms. Hu explained that in early March 2025, after gathering some personal items in Wuwei City, she started her journey back to Beijing. On March 9th, while stopping at a checkpoint in the outskirts of Beijing, she was suddenly approached by seven to eight unidentified individuals who took her phone, documents, and clothes, and forcefully placed her in a car with Anhui license plates. The people in the car told her they were taking her back to Anhui to handle her case, but instead, they took her to the Fourth People’s Hospital in Wuhu City (a mental hospital).

Ms. Hu stated that in the mental hospital, she was forcefully given unknown drugs. She resisted and requested to be discharged multiple times but was threatened by the doctors that she would be restrained if she continued to resist. After six days, Ms. Hu’s brother and business partner managed to rescue her after inquiring from multiple sources.

According to a recorded conversation between Ms. Hu’s brother and a doctor, the doctor claimed that local officials brought Ms. Hu to the hospital as a vagrant. They mentioned her repeated attempts to leave, so they deemed her mentally unstable and provided treatment. Upon discharge, Ms. Hu was required to pay over 4,000 yuan for her hospital stay.

“After being discharged, my family took me to a hospital in Nanjing for examination. The results showed that I do not have any mental illness,” revealed the examination report from Nanjing Brain Hospital, indicating that Ms. Hu did not exhibit symptoms such as anxiety, depression, low mood, pessimism, or delusions.

In response to the incident, local “authorities” in Wuwei City stated on April 7 to Upstream News that the police found no evidence of fraud in Wang’s case. While Wang was indeed married with a child when dating Ms. Hu, he was in the process of getting a divorce. As a precaution, the police filed a case and are still investigating whether it constitutes bigamy.

Regarding Ms. Hu being taken to a mental hospital for treatment, the individual mentioned that during the case proceedings, Ms. Hu repeatedly expressed suicidal thoughts and claimed severe depression due to the incident. They explained that on March 9th, she drove from Anhui to Beijing against advice. Due to her poor mental state, for safety reasons, the police took her from the checkpoint in Beijing’s outskirts to the Fourth People’s Hospital in Wuhu City for treatment.

However, according to a lawyer, the man lived with the woman, and despite knowing he was married, failed to inform her, leading her into a false understanding. She suffered financial losses due to paying for daily expenses, which could constitute bigamy and fraud. Additionally, according to the Mental Health Law, treatment for mental disorders is voluntary. If the guardian does not consent, medical institutions cannot force hospitalization. Since the woman posed no threat to herself or others, the police should not have forcibly taken her to the mental hospital.

The incident sparked outrage online. Netizens overwhelmingly expressed their opinions, with comments like, “In broad daylight, it’s unbelievable how they turn lies into truths.” “They should thoroughly investigate everyone involved with this man. This is outrageous.” “He might have some ‘connections.'” “The rank must be significant, as they could abduct someone in broad daylight.”

“Even if she had a mental illness, strangers should not be able to forcibly send her for treatment.” “If it’s true that police officers forcefully sent a normal person to a mental hospital in broad daylight, they must be severely punished!” “This has always been the case, they solve the person who brings up the problem first.” “People like him should face severe consequences.”
