If your garden is plagued by mice, besides using traditional methods like mousetraps or poison baits, are there other ways to get rid of them without harming the mice and make them leave on their own? In response to this question, an expert has shared a natural mouse-repelling tool that you already have on you.
According to the report by the UK’s “Daily Express,” using mousetraps, poison baits, or chemical pesticides to get rid of mice may also harm other animals or disrupt the ecosystem, so it’s best to prioritize natural methods of pest control.
Juanita Schulze, a gardening expert from the American seed supplier Davids Garden Seeds, mentioned that human hair is one of the best tools to drive mice out of the garden since mice tend to avoid getting close to human hair.
Schulze explained that mice dislike the scent of human hair. If you know someone from a salon or barbershop, you can ask them for some trimmed hair or collect hair from your own comb, then scatter the hair around your garden to ward off mice.
This method might seem strange, but gardeners often use it effectively to repel mice. Human hair emits a strong odor and signals the presence of humans nearby, which mice perceive as a threat and therefore stay away.
However, if you find this method hard to accept, you can also use garlic to repel mice.
Schulze mentioned that mice detest the strong odor of garlic. You can chop up garlic, boil it in water, strain the garlic, pour the garlic-infused water into a spray bottle, and spray it around the base of your plants. You can also scatter minced garlic around the garden to keep mice away.
She said, “The main advantage of using garlic spray is that you are not using other toxic pesticides in your garden. This is an eco-friendly and ecologically beneficial method for pest control and disease prevention.”
Additionally, if you have coffee grounds on hand, you can also use them to repel mice as the strong bitter taste of coffee grounds acts similarly to garlic.
Schulze added, “Sprinkling coffee grounds around your garden can deter mice because they dislike the smell of coffee.”
Another benefit of coffee grounds is that they can serve as natural fertilizer for plants. For acid-loving plants like roses or hydrangeas, a small amount of coffee grounds can help them grow better.
As previously reported by Daiji World, you can also plant lavender, chrysanthemums, tiger lilies, black pepper, and onions in your garden to repel mice and enhance the attractiveness of your garden.
Each of these plants has unique characteristics that make them effective mice repellents. For example, black pepper contains pepperine, a compound that irritates the mice’s sensory receptors, making them sneeze and cough, prompting them to flee. Chrysanthemums contain pyrethrin, a natural insecticide that affects the nervous system of mice and other pests.
Additionally, UK pest control expert Robert Collins shared several mouse-repelling tools, including ammonia water, essential oils, and owl feathers.
Owl feathers deter mice because mice are highly intelligent creatures that can sense threats in their environment, including predators like owls.
