Several Russian drones violated Polish airspace on September 10, leading to Poland shutting down its border with Belarus. The “China-Europe Railway Express,” a long-haul freight train traveling from China to Europe, was forced to halt its services, leaving over 300 trains stranded in Belarus. As a key project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, nearly 90% of the cargo volume of the China-Europe Railway Express was affected. Despite Poland announcing on the 24th to reopen its border, this move was seen as a snub to the Chinese regime.
Since the military parade in Beijing on September 3, Russia has been increasingly assertive. They have not only intensified airstrikes on Ukraine but also used drones to violate the airspace of Poland and Romania. On September 19, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets invaded Estonian airspace for a duration of 12 minutes. On September 20, the check-in systems at several European airports were subjected to cyber-attacks, causing disruptions and delays in passenger check-ins, affecting major airports like London Heathrow, Berlin, and Brussels. On the night of September 22, airports in Denmark and Norway were temporarily closed due to the detection of large unidentified drones in their airspace, resulting in over 100 flights being diverted or delayed, impacting tens of thousands of passengers. All these incidents point back to Russia.
In response to the Russian threats, the Polish government is seriously considering acquiring nuclear weapons and plans to establish a 500,000-strong military force, investing heavily to build the strongest military in mainland Europe. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski believes that the new arms race might accelerate the downfall of the Putin regime.
