When purchasing a new or used car, the lifespan of the vehicle is one of the key factors to consider. Car owners often seek a vehicle with good performance and a long lifespan, not only to save money but also as a sign of high-quality automobile. With the advancement of automotive technology, at least 30 car models have a possibility of up to 36% to travel 250,000 miles or more, and Toyota stands out as the brand with the longest lifespan.
The lifespan of a car varies depending on the vehicle type, usage, and maintenance. While the probability of a regular car reaching 250,000 miles or more is 8.6%, iSeeCars.com’s latest research has identified 30 models with the longest lifespan, all of which are more likely to reach the 250,000-mile milestone.
Toyota leads the pack with 9 out of the top 30 longest-lifespan models, followed by Honda with 6 models. SUVs dominate the list, occupying 16 positions, followed by 8 pickups and 4 sedans.
The highest-ranked vehicles are Toyota Tundra and Toyota Sequoia, with four times the likelihood of reaching 250,000 miles compared to regular vehicles. Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, Highlander Hybrid, as well as Honda Ridgeline, have three times the likelihood of reaching 250,000 miles.
iSeeCars initiated the industry-leading study on the “longest-lifespan vehicles” in 2013. This year’s research analyzed over 402 million vehicles to determine which ones are most likely to travel at least 250,000 miles. SUVs dominate the list of longest-lifespan vehicles, with Toyota being the most prominent brand, with 9 models making the list. The most durable model, Toyota Tundra, has a 36.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.
iSeeCars’ analyst, Karl Brauer, stated, “The durability of modern cars is increasing, with 12% to 36% of the chance that 30 models can reach 250,000 miles. Many consumers still believe that a car’s lifespan ends at 100,000 miles. However, our latest study on longevity confirms that even 200,000 miles is not the end for many cars. The top 9 cars on this year’s list have over a 20% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.”
Pickup trucks also hold a significant position on the list, with 6 full-size and 2 mid-size models making it. iSeeCars excluded heavy-duty trucks from the main list of longest-lifespan vehicles.
While SUVs and pickups dominate the list of longest-lifespan vehicles, four sedans and one hatchback also made the cut, with two of them being hybrid models. This indicates that consumers can drive longer-lasting vehicles without incurring higher upfront and operational costs associated with pickups or SUVs.
“Considering the rising prices of both new and used cars, seeing so many models capable of reaching 250,000 miles is encouraging,” said Brauer. “If consumers can drive these longer-lasting models, even though they may have higher sticker prices, the cost per mile remains relatively lower.”
