The 98th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is set to kick off today at 8:30 am, featuring 22 floats, 39 giant balloons, and numerous celebrity performances. Despite the weather forecast predicting rain, an estimated 3 million people are expected to gather at the scene. The police have stated that security measures have been put in place, with no credible threats reported.
As Thanksgiving approaches, English-language NTD TV will air special coverage starting at 9 am on Thursday and provide live streaming, while Chinese-language NTD and Epoch Times will broadcast parts of the New York parade.
This traditional holiday event will be led by actress Alison Brie starting at 8:30 am on Thursday from West 77th Street and Central Park West, proceeding towards Herald Square where the Macy’s flagship store is located. The parade route spans 2.5 miles with an anticipated 3 million spectators in attendance.
This year’s parade features six new giant balloons, including Minnie Mouse, Nora the Extraordinary, Elf on the Shelf, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Goku from Dragon Ball, and a new version of Spider-Man.
Additionally, there are six new floats, such as the Disney Cruise Line, Haribo, Netflix’s “Wednesday Feast,” Universal Orlando Resort, The Grannies Car, and the adventurous Dora. The New York Liberty, WNBA champions, will also participate alongside their mascot Ellie the Elephant.
Mayor Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch held a press conference on November 27 at the balloon inflation site to discuss security measures for the parade. Adams assured full surveillance throughout the parade, warning against any disruptions and emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards violence or disturbances.
Tisch confirmed there are currently no credible threats, announcing increased police presence along the parade route and surrounding communities. K-9 units and specialized police teams will be deployed, with drones monitoring the sky and entrance points conducting checks to ensure public safety. She urged on-site spectators to report any suspicious activities to uniformed officers or dial 911.
The prime viewing spots for the parade are along Central Park West between West 75th and West 61st Streets, as well as along Sixth Avenue between West 59th and West 38th Streets. Those planning to attend in person are advised to arrive early, be mindful of potential road closures, and check online for updates beforehand.
