On Friday, July 25, the intense artillery exchange sparked by border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia entered its second day. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they generally agreed to the ceasefire proposal put forward by Malaysia, with the condition that it must be based on “appropriate practical circumstances”.
Earlier in the day, Thailand had rejected third-party mediation. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the continuous indiscriminate attacks by the Cambodian military on Thai territory on social media platform X, stating, “Cambodia’s actions show a lack of sincerity and continue to put civilians in danger.”
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated on Thursday that he had spoken with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, urging both sides to seek a peaceful resolution.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his agreement with the ceasefire proposal put forward by the Malaysian Prime Minister on social media on Friday.
This is the most serious conflict between Cambodia and Thailand in the past 13 years, reportedly resulting in at least 20 deaths and over 130,000 people displaced. Thailand has prepared nearly 300 evacuation facilities.
The conflict began when a Thai soldier was injured by a landmine, with Thailand accusing the landmine of being recently placed by the Cambodian military, a claim Cambodia denies as unfounded.
