Tesla Cybertruck May Sales Exceed Ford Lightning for the First Time

Tesla’s electric truck Cybertruck surpassed Ford’s F-150 Lightning in sales for the first time in May, according to data from last week released in the United States.

Since its debut in November 2023, this May marked the first month where Cybertruck outsold Lightning, although Lightning remains the most popular electric truck in the American market.

In May, Cybertruck had 3,907 registrations, while Ford’s Lightning had 2,353 registrations. The cumulative sales of Lightning have exceeded that of Cybertruck, as reported by The Washington Post.

Ford’s sedan data released in July showed strong demand for the electric truck F-150 Lightning, with a 77% increase in electric vehicle sales in the second quarter compared to the same period last year.

However, Ford’s electric vehicle division, Model e, is still operating at a loss. In the first quarter of 2024, Ford averaged a loss of $132,000 for every electric vehicle sold, failing to meet the company’s expectations. Reports indicated that Ford reduced orders from battery suppliers in May and delayed the production of new electric vehicle production lines.

Ford’s CEO Jim Farley recently expressed the hope of introducing a profitable affordable electric vehicle within two and a half years, aiming to compete directly with rivals like Tesla and BYD.

Cybertruck also faces challenges as it recently had to recall nearly 4,000 vehicles due to an accelerator pedal fault causing unintended acceleration. The incident highlights the industry’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and reliability of electric vehicles.
