The Sheriff’s Office of Shelby County, Tennessee, announced on Sunday (July 20th) that Corey Adams, a freshman at the University of Mississippi and a football player, was killed in a shooting incident in the state, with four others injured.
According to a statement from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred at an intersection in Cordova, a suburb of Memphis, on Saturday night. The Ole Miss freshman was found wounded inside a car when local law enforcement arrived at the scene.
“They administered first aid until the Shelby County Fire Department arrived. Shelby County Fire Department personnel then pronounced the victim dead on the scene,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
Additionally, four other men were injured in the incident but their injuries were not life-threatening. They were taken to a nearby hospital in a private vehicle for treatment.
Law enforcement authorities have not released the names of any suspects, but have stated that they are investigating the shooting as a homicide case.
Adams, 18 years old, hails from New Orleans, Louisiana, and is known as one of the top football defensive players in the United States.
The University of Mississippi football program posted on social media expressing deep sorrow over Adams’ death.
The team stated, “While our program is working to cope with this tragic loss, our hearts are with his family during this extremely difficult time. We ask the University of Mississippi community to keep Corey in their thoughts and to respect the privacy of all those involved.”
A statement from the Edna Karr Cougars, the high school football team that Adams previously belonged to in New Orleans, was posted on Facebook, expressing that “the pain is indescribable” and highlighting that “Corey Adams was more than just a football player! He was a friend, a brother, a son, a student, and an all-around outstanding young man.”
