Two years after the shocking June 10, 2022 Tangshan barbecue restaurant assault incident, the case is once again in the spotlight. On August 5, Chen Zhiwei, the police officer who responded to the incident at the time, made a report from another location, stating that the police station delayed their response and that Tangshan city leaders threatened him to read the false news report and respond to the scene in “5 minutes,” ultimately making frontline police officers take the blame.
Former police officer Chen Zhiwei from the Tangshan Public Security Bureau Lubu Sub-bureau Airport Road Police Station spoke in a video, revealing that he reported the law enforcement personnel in Caofeidian District of Tangshan city by name and presented his ID and original police officer certificate.
Chen Zhiwei stated, “During the investigation, they used improper interrogation methods to obtain illegal records from me. They did not truthfully record the real process of the ‘610’ incident (Tangshan barbecue restaurant assault incident), covering up the facts. They did not truthfully record my interview process. Ultimately, to make me, a frontline police officer, take the blame, they persecuted me, fabricated charges, and forced a conviction.”
According to Chen Zhiwei’s report, in early September 2022, he was transferred to the detention center in Caofeidian District. While at the detention center, he wrote two complaint letters and filed complaints within the organization, but there has been no significant progress for nearly two years.
After regaining his freedom on July 16 last year, he openly reported the issues in his case to the Tangshan Intermediate Court, Intermediate Procuratorate, Tangshan City Commission for Discipline Inspection, and other departments. All departments acknowledged receiving the report but did not follow up.
Chen Zhiwei submitted a request for retrial to the Tangshan Intermediate Court and Caofeidian District Court, but these departments took no action and used delaying tactics. Regarding the “610” incident, due to video length restrictions, he summarized three points:
1. It took nearly half an hour from receiving the call to arriving at the scene after the incident was reported, causing a significant delay in the response. He was not the officer responsible for responding at the police station at that time, and he was only notified at 3 am and had to respond to the scene at the last minute. The actual time from receiving the order to reaching the scene was just over 10 minutes.
2. After responding to the scene, it took nearly three hours to handle the entire incident, working from midnight continuously until daybreak, carrying out a significant amount of work.
3. At the interview scene, in front of more than ten staff members from various departments in Tangshan city, he truthfully stated that it took just over 10 minutes to reach the scene. He refused to read out the news report claiming they responded in “5 minutes,” but was harshly ordered and threatened by the city-level leaders to “quickly read the script.”
Chen Zhiwei stated that in his upcoming reports, he will clearly explain all the facts of the “610” incident, with objective video recordings, audio recordings, WeChat chat records, and other relevant evidence and witnesses to support his claims. “I fully bear the legal responsibility for what I have said above.”
As a result, the Tangshan barbecue restaurant assault incident is once again in the spotlight.

In the early hours of June 10, 2022, a sexual harassment and violent assault incident occurred at Tangshan Laohancheng barbecue restaurant. Chen Jizhi failed to harass Wang, who was dining with friends at the restaurant, and subsequently violently attacked Wang and three other women with several other men. The assault moved from inside the restaurant to outside, involving punching, kicking, using chairs, wine bottles, and continued assault in an alley. The victims were taken to the hospital for treatment, and two were classified as level 2 minor injuries.
After public outrage over the incident, charges were brought against 28 individuals. Chen Jizhi, the primary perpetrator, was sentenced to 24 years in prison, while the other 27 defendants received sentences ranging from six months to 11 years, with Chen Zhiwei receiving a 1 year and 1 month sentence. However, the true identities of the victims in the Tangshan assault case remain unknown to this day.
