Taiwanese siblings reunite with adopted family after nearly 30 years with help from household registration office.

A 30-year-old woman surnamed Lin from Taichung, Taiwan, was adopted when she was just over a year old. It was only on her adoptive father’s deathbed that she was informed about her biological parents and siblings. Ten years ago, Lin started seeking her roots and finally, with the help of the household registration office in Zhushan, Nantou, she managed to contact her biological brother and reunite with him, in a heartwarming scene.

The director of the Zhushan Household Registration Office in Nantou, Liang Kunyong, wrote on Facebook, “In the midst of myriad searches, he was nowhere to be found, yet quietly residing in a neighboring town.” He mentioned a popular variety show from many years ago named “Super Sunday,” which featured a touching segment called “Super Mission” that showcased heartwarming stories including the searching for lost relatives, often bringing tears to viewers’ eyes.

Liang Kunyong recounted that on April 30, the Zhushan Household Registration Office witnessed its own touching “Super Mission” of searching for relatives. The story was simple – Miss Lin, who resides in the south, was adopted by a couple with the surname Lin since childhood. Upon her adoptive father’s disclosure on his deathbed about her biological parents and siblings, Lin couldn’t help but constantly think about finding her biological family. Despite searching through the household registration office in Kaohsiung three times, she had no luck in locating her relatives.

“Recently, Miss Lin contacted retired investigator Zhang Changping, who used to be the team leader of a police substation in Taichung, and the deputy team leader of the investigation team in Zhushan, Yan Zhangxian, through the Zhushan Household Registration Office seeking assistance on April 30. They accompanied Miss Lin and her friends to the office to help her search for her family,” said Liang Kunyong.

After learning about Miss Lin’s situation, the staff at the Zhushan Household Registration Office promptly took action. Although they couldn’t locate Lin’s biological mother, they managed to contact her older biological brother, who had also been searching for his younger sister in Kaohsiung multiple times after being adopted just like her. Serendipitously, Lin’s brother happened to be working in a town adjacent to Zhushan that day. Yan Zhangxian warmly mediated the reunion, persuading her brother to temporarily set aside his work and rush to the office for a heartwarming family reunion.

Liang Kunyong expressed, “Each (search for relatives) case carries poignant stories of sorrow and joy. Working in a public service sector, enjoying such meaningful results of helping others truly constitutes a joyous and virtuous practice!”

According to a press release from the Zhushan Town Household Registration Office in Nantou County, Lin and her brother reunited after more than 20 years apart. Besides catching up on each other’s lives, her brother revealed that their mother, due to financial difficulties, had to give Lin up for adoption as she was unable to provide for her. He had also searched for her whereabouts in Kaohsiung without any success until the unexpected reunion they experienced. The siblings expressed gratitude to the staff of the Zhushan Household Registration Office for facilitating their reunion, erasing any lingering regrets in their hearts.

As reported by Taiwan’s “Liberty Times,” Liang Kunyong remarked that the siblings’ reunion was a predestined arrangement. Lin’s father had passed away early, and her mother was moderately disabled, leading to her adoption in Kaohsiung due to economic pressures. Lin’s brother, Liao, was also adopted by his uncle for economic reasons. Liao had always stayed in touch with his birth mother and even dreamt the night before the reunion that his adoptive father told him he would reunite with Lin, only to receive the long-awaited call the next day, which felt surreal.

Currently, Liao runs an ironworking business in Taichung and resides in the same city as his sister. This successful “Super Mission” of reuniting the siblings was made possible thanks to the dedicated efforts of the enthusiastic police and relentless pursuit by the staff at the household registration office.
