Taiwan Orchid Expo Debuts at Queens Botanical Garden in New York City

The 11th Taiwan Orchid World Exhibition in Taiwan is being held at the Queens Botanical Gardens in New York from August 9th to 11th, showcasing a total of 990 pots of orchids, including various rare orchid species and unique orchids exclusive to Taiwan, providing visitors with the opportunity to appreciate authentic traditional Taiwanese culture. Orchid enthusiasts can also learn the secrets of caring for orchids and acquire their favorite orchid varieties.

This year’s Taiwan Orchid Exhibition is co-organized by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and the Queens Botanical Garden (QBG). On August 8th, the organizers invited various community organizations to preview the exhibition activities and experience Taiwanese culture in advance. The event was attended by members of Congress Meng Zhaowen, New York State Assemblyman Kim Do-Sik, Steven Raga, and New York City Councilor Huang Min-yi.

According to Lee Chih-chiang, Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, Taiwan boasts a rich variety of orchids and is the birthplace of over 400 species of orchids, earning it the reputation of the “Orchid Kingdom.” Taiwan’s orchid exports exceeded 200 million U.S. dollars in 2023, with high quality. One-third of the world’s orchids come from Taiwan, and approximately 60% to 80% of the orchid varieties circulating in the market are developed in Taiwan.

Pauline Huang, Ambassador of the Queens Botanical Garden, introduced that most of the 990 pots of orchids on display this year are predominantly popular Phalaenopsis orchids. Rare varieties such as Dendrobium chrysotoxum, Paphiopedilum armeniacum, Cattleya, and Vanda are also included. This year’s theme incorporates the colors representing three elements of Taiwan: Taiwan green, Taiwan red, and Taiwan gold, symbolizing Taiwan’s vitality and passion.

Huang Bai-ling, the founder of the Taiwan Orchid World Exhibition and the current Ambassador of the Gardens, was honored with June 3rd being declared Huang Bai-ling Day in the 6th Congressional District by Congressman Meng Zhaowen to commemorate her contributions to the community. Huang Bai-ling, who has served the botanical garden for 11 years, was also awarded the Rose Gala Award on June 3rd this year.

Taiwan is currently the largest source of orchid imports to the United States, holding a significant position in the global orchid market. Du Wei, Manager of Horticultural Projects at the Gardens, stated that there are tens of thousands of orchid species worldwide, with Taiwan’s orchid varieties being renowned globally. The exhibition also includes five unique orchids from Taiwan: Dendrobium bigibbum (Dragon Orchid), Pterostylis chinensis (Long-legged Lamb Pterostylis), Dendrobium chrysotoxum, Bulbophyllum aurantiacum, and Bulbophyllum longiflorum.

In traditional Chinese culture, orchids are considered noble flowers, symbolizing the integrity and demeanor of a gentleman. The organizers hope that the orchid exhibition will help more people understand the culture of truth, goodness, and beauty that Taiwanese people embody, fostering close exchanges between different ethnic groups and Taiwan.

Congressman Meng Zhaowen expressed his love for orchids, mentioning that former Speaker Pelosi also particularly likes orchids and often expresses respect and tribute to friends and important figures by gifting orchids. Executive Director Evie Hantzopoulos presided over the event at the Queens Botanical Garden and expressed gratitude to Meng Zhaowen for securing a $500,000 federal grant for the Garden.

Assemblyman Kim Do-Sik praised the Taiwan Orchid Exhibition as a part of Taiwan’s cultural uniqueness, stating that “sharing the symbolism of the beauty of orchids is part of strengthening Taiwan-American efforts” and that he fully supports this beautiful event every year.

Assemblyman Steven Raga emphasized that “all heritage and culture should be appreciated, respected, and promoted,” and after learning about Taiwan’s beautiful culture today, he expressed his desire to personally visit Taiwan.

Tapugao Falefou, the representative of Tuvalu to the United Nations, stated that the Taiwan Orchid Exhibition remains an exciting event and that this was his second time attending.

With a total of 990 pots of orchids in various colors and shapes displayed, the exhibition is ready to welcome visitors. Huang Bai-ling introduced that this year’s event includes traditional calligraphy, 3D jelly flower and diabolo demonstrations, dough figurine art, tea ceremony, music, and more, offering a rich cultural experience. Friends who love orchids can come and learn techniques for pest control, cultivation, and care, as well as acquire their favorite orchid varieties.

Furthermore, on August 9th, the organizers will provide free consultation services promoting Taiwan tourism during the event. Apart from enjoying traditional Taiwanese folk arts and culture during the event, people can also enjoy family-friendly activities and indulge in a multi-sensory experience rich in Taiwanese flavor. The public is encouraged to participate in the event.

The exhibition dates are from August 9th to 11th (Friday to Sunday) at the Queens Botanical Garden located at 43-50 Main St., Flushing NY 11355. Parking is available at 42-80 Crommelin St., Flushing.
