Taiwan Foreign Minister: Taiwan and Brazil achieve new breakthroughs in political and economic exchanges.

Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joseph Wu, pointed out that Taiwan and Brazil have made further breakthroughs in political and economic exchanges. Thanks to the efforts of Gil Diniz, a member of the São Paulo State Legislature, and the Taiwan-friendly coalition in the legislature, Taiwan’s “Latin America Sales Promotion Team” was able to hold a forum for the first time at the São Paulo State Legislature, displaying the flags of Taiwan and Brazil and playing their national anthems.

Minister Joseph Wu posted on Facebook today (12th), titled “Deepening Taiwan-Brazil Cooperation Starting from São Paulo,” stating that through the efforts of Gil Diniz and the Taiwan-friendly coalition in the legislature, Taiwan’s “Latin America Sales Promotion Team” successfully held a forum at the State Legislature, attracting many São Paulo state dignitaries to attend. The event featured the display of flags from Taiwan and Brazil, the playing of national anthems, and was broadcast live on television, showcasing the firm support of the São Paulo State Legislature for Taiwan.

Looking back, Minister Wu recalled that during a layover in São Paulo, Brazil in mid-July, Gil Diniz specially went to the airport to meet with him, allowing him to feel the unique warmth and enthusiasm of Brazil, bridging the over 20,000-kilometer gap between them. With the recent efforts of Diniz and the Taiwan-friendly coalition in the legislature, Taiwan and Brazil have seen further progress in their political and economic exchanges.

Minister Wu mentioned that the Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in São Paulo, Chu Yi-ching, shared her joy with him recently, as the “Latin America Sales Promotion Team” organized by the Bureau of Foreign Trade of Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Taiwan External Trade Development Council held a forum at the State Legislature during their visit to São Paulo in August. The event attracted 10 state legislators, along with over 70 former state legislators, São Paulo city council members, and legislative assistants, creating a lively atmosphere.

“By displaying both the Taiwan and Brazil flags at the event and playing the national anthems of the two countries before the forum began, as well as televising the entire proceedings,” Minister Wu said, “the São Paulo State Legislature demonstrated its strong support for Taiwan.”

He went on to say that during the forum, Diniz reiterated that despite facing strong pressure from the Chinese Communist Party, members of the Taiwan-friendly coalition in the legislature remain steadfast in their support for Taiwan, standing in solidarity with Taiwan that upholds democracy and freedom. The people of São Paulo are willing to deepen cooperation with Taiwan and recognize Taiwan as an independent and sovereign country. This powerful statement received warm applause from attendees, showcasing the firm support of the São Paulo State Legislature for Taiwan.

“Brazil is the largest country in South America, and establishing and deepening cooperation with Brazil has always been a long-term goal for Taiwan,” Wu stated. “Starting with this breakthrough in São Paulo, it not only marks a milestone in Taiwan-Brazil exchanges but also lays the groundwork for deepening bilateral democratic partnerships.”

Furthermore, Minister Wu mentioned that besides visiting Brazil, Taiwan’s “Latin America Sales Promotion Team” also visited countries such as Colombia, Peru, and Chile, actively engaging with local businesses, officials, and Taiwanese entrepreneurs to demonstrate Taiwan’s economic strength. Through economic diplomacy and collaboration with Latin American countries, they aim to build bridges of friendship and prosperity together.
