Survivors Speak Out as Inner Mongolia Septic Tank Accident Goes Unresolved for Over a Month

Last month, a collapse occurred in Inner Mongolia during the construction of a manure pit on a breeding farm, resulting in the deaths of 2 people and injuries to 2 others. A month later, there has been no visible resolution, prompting concerns.

A viral video showed that at the time of the incident, several workers were working inside a large pit, with a loader on the ground conducting construction. Suddenly, one side of the wall collapsed, causing the loader to lose balance and fall into the pit, burying many people inside.

According to a report from “New Beijing News Video,” the accident took place in Tundu Town, Shangdu County, Ulanqab City, Inner Mongolia. On August 4th, an injured worker recalled the sequence of events.

As described by the injured worker, on July 6th, they were working at a breeding farm to build a manure pit. At the time of the accident, he was working in the pit while a worker above was operating the loader to backfill the soil. He heard a mason shout to the workers above, warning them that there were people below, but they dismissed the concern and continued working, leading to the collapse of the wall by the loader.

“When the four-meter-high wall collapsed, I was stunned. As the loader fell, I managed to run inside the pit, so it didn’t crush me,” the injured worker said. “Nevertheless, I sustained injuries – 8 broken ribs, dislocated shoulder and collarbone, stitches on my head, and torn arm tendons. It’s been a month now, but there has been no compensation; I even had to pay for my medical expenses.”

The injured worker mentioned that none of the workers had signed contracts, and the breeding farm did not have construction qualifications, paying wages on a daily basis at 200 yuan per day. Including the day of the incident, they had worked for 20 days.

According to a relative of one of the deceased, the accident resulted in two deaths and two injuries, with one person still in an ICU in Beijing, one already discharged, and two others who died on the spot. The driver managed to jump out of the truck before it fell and was unharmed.

The relative of the deceased stated that the family members were not notified at the time of the incident, but the farm owner promptly called the police. Two parties are held responsible for this incident: the farm owner, who has been arrested, and a subcontractor who is currently in police custody. However, a month has passed since the accident, with no clear resolution or accountability.

The family member further expressed, “The pig farm is privately owned without proper procedures, and the subcontractor hired without qualifications. There were no safety measures or warning signs at the construction site, which was hazardous. The local government and regulatory authorities failed to take any measures to prevent illegal construction, issue warnings, or impose fines.”

In response, a local government official from Tundu Town only mentioned that 2 people died in the accident, the public security department is involved, and relevant personnel have been detained. However, there was no mention of specific actions taken to address the situation.
