This article tells the story of Xia Beibei, a girl from Hubei who fled to Japan in February this year. She grew up under the oppression and persecution of the local government due to her parents’ rights activism. As an adult, facing intensified persecution from authorities, she quit her high-paying job in Beijing to speak up for her helpless parents.
Last year, when she learned that the authorities planned to convict her along with her parents in their case, Xia Beibei started planning to escape China so she could continue advocating for her parents overseas. She hoped to draw international attention to the state of China’s judiciary through her family’s experience. She said, “If every victim remains silent, silenced by force, our family’s ordeal may happen in every household.”
Recently, Xia Beibei shared with a reporter a series of events that occurred in her family, greatly impacting her life. Before the trouble started, her family was happy and successful in the vegetable wholesale business.
In 2003, Xia Beibei’s mother, Yin Dengzhen, reported corrupt dealings involving government officials in Hubei to the authorities. This led to severe persecution by the government, causing her mother to become a target.
Xia Beibei recounted incidents of her parents being violently mistreated by security personnel, surveillance on their family, and even her mother being falsely accused and sentenced multiple times. Despite facing numerous challenges and hardships, Xia Beibei continued to strive for justice and protection for her family.
Later on, Xia Beibei went on to share the ongoing struggles her family faced, including her father’s severe injury and her mother’s repeated unjust imprisonment. These events shaped Xia Beibei’s determination to seek justice and fight for her family’s rights.
Through perseverance and resilience, Xia Beibei worked tirelessly, taking on different jobs and even starting her own business to support her family financially. Despite facing discrimination due to her parents’ criminal cases, Xia Beibei remained courageous and determined to seek justice for her loved ones.
In 2016, Xia Beibei moved to Shanghai and then to Chengdu for better job opportunities. She faced continuous harassment and threats due to her involvement in advocating for her mother’s case. Xia Beibei’s relentless efforts to protect her family led her to unexpected challenges and dangers.
In 2023, her mother was brutally attacked, prompting Xia Beibei to take immediate action to ensure her mother’s safety and seek justice. Her relentless pursuit of truth and justice exposed the corruption and brutality her family faced.
Despite the sacrifices and hardships she endured, Xia Beibei remained steadfast in seeking international support to address her family’s plight. She expressed her determination to not remain silent and continue to fight for justice, human rights, and social justice.
Currently, Xia Beibei is preparing legal documents and evidence to submit to international organizations, aiming to bring her family’s case to the global stage in hopes of seeking justice and accountability for the injustice they have endured.
