Sudden Disaster Strikes: New Immigrant Families in Ontario, Southern California Encounter Hardships

In recent years, many Chinese immigrants have come to the United States with their families, relying on their unique diligence to establish themselves in America and pursue the enviable American dream. However, unforeseen circumstances can bring a family into unprecedented distress.

Ontario immigrant Chinese family, Cindy Yan, arrived in the United States four years ago. Like many Chinese families, the husband and wife devoted themselves to work, took out loans to buy a house, and added a lovely daughter to their family three years ago. Just as the family was enjoying their time together, Cindy was involved in a car accident while at work, plunging the family into crisis.

To supplement the family’s income and repay the mortgage, as well as to care for their child, Cindy would drive out to deliver packages for Amazon late into the night. On March 7th, while on a delivery, she was hit by a car and lost consciousness due to the impact. It was discovered during rescue efforts that her left ribs were almost completely fractured, her pelvis was broken into four pieces, the cartilage connecting the pelvis and leg bones was displaced, her spleen was damaged, and there were also minor injuries to her head arteries and neck vertebrae…

A friend tried to contact Cindy but couldn’t reach her, so they quickly called her husband. Four hours later, with the help of the police, her husband found out that she had been taken to the Garden Grove Emergency Center.

Doctors performed six major surgeries on Cindy within a week, transfusing dozens of bags of blood, pulling her back from the brink of death.

Their daughter, Amber, thought her mom was going to have another baby when she first visited her at the hospital. Eventually she learned that her mom was hospitalized due to her injuries and couldn’t come home. After the visit, Amber cried, wanting her mom to come home with them, which saddened the couple deeply. Their eldest son has been restless due to worrying about his mother’s condition.

Because she can’t exert pressure on her knee and hip bones, every morning Cindy’s husband has to help her get out of bed and onto a wheelchair. Gradually, Cindy has started to move a bit with the help of a cane for rehabilitation. To cope with the pressure of repaying the loan and the daily expenses of the elderly and children at home, her husband works from dawn till late at night, rushing home around 7 am to send the kids to school or kindergarten before going back to work.

Due to the limited insurance coverage of the at-fault party, Cindy is only entitled to a small amount of compensation for the accident. During the pandemic, the couple did not receive any assistance and solely relied on their own earnings to support the family; after the accident, with the pressure of the mortgage, taxes, and daily expenses, their household finances started to dwindle, putting them in a difficult situation, causing them great anxiety.

With elderly parents and two children to support, and with Cindy still recovering from injuries, her husband cannot work properly. In this situation, Cindy and her family are appealing to kind-hearted individuals to help them get through this difficult time.

“I never expected such an accident to happen,” Cindy lamented. “Our income was pretty stable before the accident. But now, with me unable to work at all and my husband by my side in the hospital for nearly two months, everything has changed.”
