Spirit Airlines opens Caribbean route, with fares as low as $66.

On Tuesday, Spirit Airlines announced the launch of two new routes to Caribbean countries later this year. The first route will be from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Belize City, Belize, starting on November 21 with three flights a week – on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

To promote the new route, Spirit Airlines is offering $85 one-way tickets from Fort Lauderdale. The second route will begin on December 4, flying from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Cayman Island in the Cayman Islands, with three flights a week – on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Promotional one-way tickets from Fort Lauderdale are priced at $66.

Spirit Airlines will be the only airline flying directly from Fort Lauderdale to these two destinations. John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning for the airline, stated in a press release, “This is a huge win for our passengers within our network. As we continue to expand services from Fort Lauderdale, travelers will have greater convenience to reach top destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America.”

Spirit Airlines is a U.S. ultra-low-cost carrier headquartered in Dania Beach, in the Miami metropolitan area. The airline operates regular flights between the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. As of 2023, Spirit Airlines was the seventh largest passenger carrier in North America and the largest ultra-low-cost carrier in the region. However, in November 2024, the airline filed for bankruptcy protection and completed a financial restructuring in March 2025, successfully emerging from bankruptcy protection.

The company had previously announced on July 28 that it would temporarily lay off around 270 pilots on November 1 and demote an additional 140 pilots, while also reducing flights to stabilize its strained financial situation.
