According to the report by Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean Ministry of National Defense announced on Friday (December 6) that Lieutenant Generals Lee Jin-woo, Kwak Jong-geun, and Lyu In-hyung, who are the commanders of the Army Capital Defense Command, the Special Warfare Command, and the Counterintelligence Command respectively, have been suspended from their duties with immediate effect. They have been temporarily replaced by Major General Kim Ho-fuk, Brigadier General Park Seung-ji, and Brigadier General Lee Kyung-min.
Following the unsuccessful imposition of martial law on the night of December 3, South Korean President Yun Seok-yul rejected the resignation of Park An-se, the former martial law commander and current Chief of Staff of the South Korean Army, instructing him to focus on his duties as the Chief of Staff.
Earlier, the Director of the South Korean National Intelligence Service, Hong Chang-won, stated that President Yun Seok-yul had called him after declaring martial law, instructing him to “arrest political figures.”
On Friday, the Director of the South Korean National Intelligence Service, Cho Tai-yong, clarified and confirmed that President Yun Seok-yul did not instruct him to arrest political figures when declaring the state of emergency. Cho Tai-yong further mentioned that after the reports surfaced, he personally asked if the information was accurate, to which Hong Chang-won responded, “That was a misreport.”
