Entertainer Yu Tian and his wife appeared at the Shilin District Court this morning to mediate via video with their son-in-law Chen Jian, who is currently detained on suspicion of being the head of a car theft ring. They hoped to gain custody of their two grandsons, but after the mediation, both parties revealed that an agreement was not reached, indicating the possibility of another round of mediation being necessary.
After the passing of their second daughter and Yu Tian’s wife Li Yaping’s daughter, Yu Yuanqi, in 2022, the two grandchildren were solely cared for by their son-in-law Chen Jian (Gary). However, Chen Jian was arrested by the New Taipei City Haishan Police Station on suspicion of being involved in car theft and has been in custody since the end of April on charges of fraud.
Unable to bear seeing their two grandsons without proper care, Yu Tian and his wife decided to fight for custody of the two grandsons. In today’s mediation session, the court conducted the proceedings via video call, and Yu Tian later mentioned in an interview that they had expressed their desire to care for the grandchildren to Chen Jian. He said, “Chen Jian is still considering, and today there is no result. Perhaps another mediation will be arranged.”
Yu Tian and his wife also mentioned that they have no knowledge of how much property their late daughter, Yu Yuanqi, left behind and have never inquired about it.
Li Yaping also expressed that raising a child requires a lot of money, and they are willing to help. She advised Chen Jian not to be too anxious, saying, “Perhaps due to confusion and impatience this time, you may have different thoughts. As for the matters concerning the child, let him rest assured, we will take care of it.”
Furthermore, according to the Liberty Times, after Chen Jian was caught, he cooperated with the police in tracking down other accomplices. However, during the investigation, Chen Jian denied his involvement in the crimes, leading to his detention. The New Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office determined that Chen Jian and others defrauded up to 6 victims, causing significant losses. Today, 9 individuals were indicted for crimes including fraud involving three or more people, and the prosecution requested that the court impose severe penalties on Chen Jian.
