Simon Yam wanted to collaborate with Wu Kang Ren. Attitude changed drastically after 2 years.

In news dated October 12, 2025, Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Horse Awards for his role in the film “Should Be Happy Today.” Previously, he successfully predicted Taiwanese actor Wu Kang-jen winning the Best Actor at the 2023 Golden Horse Awards and expressed his desire to collaborate with him. However, during the Kaohsiung Film Festival on October 11, when asked if he would like to work with Wu Kang-jen, who has recently been filming in mainland China, Wong bluntly rejected the idea, stating, “Don’t harm people.”

As the featured guest at the 2025 Kaohsiung Film Festival, Wong, along with director Tan Shan-yang and Lin Shan, discussed their new film “Unforgiven Sin” during interviews. In 2022, Wong won the Best Actor award at the 59th Golden Horse Awards for his role as a taxi driver in the film “Youth in Blue.” This year, he received a nomination for the Best Supporting Actor at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards for his performance in “Should Be Happy Today.”

In 2023, Wong served as the ambassador for the Golden Horse Awards and successfully predicted Wu Kang-jen’s win, stating that Wu Kang-jen was “very talented.” As predicted, Wu Kang-jen won the Best Actor award at the 60th Golden Horse Awards for his role in “Rich Youth.” This time, Wong expressed his support for Chin Shih-chieh, predicting him to win the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in “Deep Silence.”

Wong explained the reasons behind his predictions, saying, “Because I haven’t seen the others, just watched a bit of his (Chin Shih-chieh) film, watched a few scenes. I’ve been watching his performances since I was a child because I’m three years older than him, so after watching, I felt it should be him.” He even joked, “I don’t even need to watch the movie, just guess, I should buy a lottery ticket.”

As for Wu Kang-jen, who signed with a mainland Chinese talent agency in 2024 and has been mainly active there, his recent activities, including creating a personal studio account on Weibo and joining the Little Red Book platform, have sparked discussions. After Wu Kang-jen’s video learning to roll his tongue by sipping Beijing soy milk went viral, actor Chapman To praised his tongue skills, implying his proficiency in rolling and licking movements.

When asked if he had seen the video, Wong quickly denied, stating, “No, no. Chapman To is more familiar with him.” Regarding the possibility of working with Wu Kang-jen, Wong promptly responded, “No, don’t harm people.”

During the recent 8-day holiday in mainland China for the National Day, Wu Kang-jen and other Taiwanese artists were seen reposting content from state-run media like CCTV and People’s Daily, pledging allegiance to the Chinese Communist Party. On the Double Tenth National Day of the Republic of China on October 10, Taiwanese netizens mocked Wu Kang-jen for not posting any greetings on his Facebook, questioning his silence on the ROC National Day.

Due to his support for the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong, Wong has been blacklisted by the Hong Kong government and the Chinese Communist Party. Over the years, he has not had the opportunity to star in any “China-Hong Kong co-produced films” and has only occasionally appeared in Hong Kong stage plays and independent films. In 2019, he won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the Hong Kong film “Still Human,” which he did without receiving any remuneration.

During an interview in Taiwan in 2021, Wong recalled the events surrounding the handover of Hong Kong’s sovereignty in 1997 and exclaimed, “That day, I knew Hong Kong was finished!”

Wong revealed that on the day before July 1st, he encountered two tripods symbolizing the so-called “handover” being transported in a car. Unexpectedly, one tripod fell, and one of the three legs broke off. To him, this incident was a bad omen. On the day of the sovereignty handover ceremony, Wong initially planned to go out, but upon opening the door, he immediately instinctually retreated inside. He explained, “Because I saw a purple sky, full of evil spirits that I had never seen before. And then it rained heavily, it was really an extraordinary sight.” Wong criticized the authoritarian rule in China, mocking the promises made by the CCP of “One Country, Two Systems” for Hong Kong, stating that the former was a bet and the latter was indecent. When discussing the situation in Hong Kong, Wong passionately stated that he was not a political figure but had been persecuted by the authorities for speaking the truth, resulting in years of zero income.

When asked if he would attend the Golden Horse Awards ceremony, Wong admitted, “I will try my best! I really, really want to come, because the recent work arrangements are a bit chaotic and tight, and I really don’t know how to arrange things at that time. This collaboration was canceled previously, suddenly not canceled, this is completely beyond my control.” He also revealed it was for a stage play and self-deprecatingly added, “No one dares to cast me in a movie.”
