Sichuan: Snowstorm triggers avalanche, 2 missing and injured

A team of over ten climbers encountered an avalanche at an altitude of 5100 meters while climbing the Nisee Mount in Sichuan recently. Rescue information indicated that more than ten climbers were trapped, with 2 guides buried, and the extent of casualties is currently unknown.

According to reports from Cover News, mountain enthusiast Mr. Wang mentioned that on the day of the incident, November 26, the wind was strong with temperatures around minus 20 degrees Celsius. The avalanche occurred just a few hundred meters away from reaching the summit. After the incident, Wang’s local friends immediately joined the rescue mission and brought the stranded climbers down the mountain that afternoon, but the fate of the two buried guides remains uncertain.

Wang explained that the team, consisting of guides and more than ten climbers, had planned the trip one to two months in advance. In the days leading up to the incident, the region had experienced heavy snowfall, increasing the risk of avalanches. Previous climbers who had descended from the peak also reported large amounts of snow, up to thigh-deep, making further ascent impossible. Despite the conditions, the team persisted in their attempt to summit, resulting in the accident.

On the 28th, officials from Jiulong County confirmed that an avalanche did occur on Nisee Mount on the 26th. The tourists have all been evacuated from Jiulong County, but the situation regarding the guides’ injuries or fatalities remains unclear.

Recent reports have indicated that many bloggers and travel groups on social media platforms have been recruiting and forming teams to climb Nisee Mount. Some netizens who have participated in climbing activities mentioned that online team-building can help arrange guides for a fee per person to form climbing groups.

In response to this, the Sichuan Mountaineering and Outdoor Sports Association stated that many well-known mountain peaks in Sichuan have been closed off due to forest fire prevention measures in the winter. However, Nisee Mount, with its altitude of 5564 meters and relatively lower climbing difficulty, has become a popular choice among climbers recently.

A prominent figure in the mainland mountaineering community previously pointed out that driven by financial motives, some locals in well-known mountain areas or certain outdoor groups lead inexperienced climbers for a fee. However, these individuals often lack the necessary safety knowledge, leading to accidents.

Throughout this year, there have been several incidents of injuries and fatalities among outdoor enthusiasts in various parts of China.

On October 20, a man fatally fell while climbing the Yamm Mount in Sichuan.

On October 23, a man from Dengfeng, Henan, is suspected to have slipped near a cliff while walking on a wild mountain path and tragically fell off the edge.

Recently, it was reported that a hiker fell off a cliff while climbing Jiufeng Mount in Pengzhou, Sichuan. The incident was reported on November 15, and the hiker sadly passed away while being transported to the hospital.
