On the day before the Dragon Boat Festival on the mainland of China (May 30th), a railway bridge collapsed on the G348 road section in Madao, Liangshan, Xichang City, Sichuan Province. The collapse trapped a truck under the fallen bridge, drawing widespread attention and becoming a hot search topic.
The video circulating online showed that the road had a height limit of 4.2 meters.
According to a report by Xin Jing Bao, a witness named Mr. Yu said that the truck likely crashed into the bridge due to its over-height, causing the bridge deck to shift and fall onto the truck cabin.
As reported by Feng Mian News, at 11 a.m. on May 30th, at the scene of the accident, it was observed that the collapse occurred under the Madao railway bridge, forming a triangle with the ground on one side of the railway bridge. A red truck was tilted with its cargo compartment being exactly pressed by the fallen bridge, fortunately with no personnel inside.
On the railway bridge, there was a sign indicating a height limit of 4.2 meters.
According to residents living nearby, the collapsed part was a section of the railway bridge. Several residents mentioned previous incidents of trucks scraping the bottom of the railway bridge at this location.
“The specific cause is still unclear, but the driver is unharmed,” said a traffic police officer at the scene.
Following the accident, some vehicles passed by the truck, and the area was later cordoned off. Traffic was interrupted in both directions, and a crane was brought in for the site, to manage the situation on the road section.
According to a notification from the local transportation department, around 8 a.m. that day, there were safety hazards on the Madao railway bridge section of the G348 road in Xichang. Traffic police had implemented temporary two-way traffic control for all vehicles heading towards Jingou.
The Xichang municipal government stated that the accident did not result in any casualties. Currently, further investigation is underway to determine the specific cause of the collapse of the railway bridge.
