Sichuan Neijiang City Hit by 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake, Netizens: “Our family was shaken awake”

On January 23, 2025, a series of earthquakes have struck China. At 5:50 am local time, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit the downtown area of Neijiang City in Sichuan Province. The earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers, with the epicenter located at 29.59 degrees north latitude and 104.89 degrees east longitude.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicenter of the quake was 17 kilometers from the downtown area, 18 kilometers from Dongxing District, 20 kilometers from Zizhong County, 22 kilometers from Weiyuan County, 28 kilometers from Da’an District, 16 kilometers from Neijiang City, and 142 kilometers from Chengdu City.

Following the earthquake, a local resident told Chinese media outlet “First Eye News”, “I was just woken up by the shaking at 5:50 am, it was really scary, another earthquake again.”

Some netizens in Sichuan shared their experiences online, with one saying, “I felt the shaking in Jingyan.” Another mentioned, “Our whole family was woken up by it.” And yet another said, “We felt the earthquake in Leshan.”

There were also comments questioning why there were no mobile phone alerts or text messages for the recent earthquakes. One wrote, “There was an earthquake after 9 pm the night before yesterday, and another one this morning.” Another expressed frustration, “With so many earthquakes happening, why aren’t the mobile phone alerts working? I only found out by checking social media apps like Douyin.” And some questioned, “Why didn’t the mobile phones receive alerts for the last two earthquakes?”

The frequent occurrences of earthquakes in China are causing concern among the public, with many hoping for better early warning systems and preparedness measures to mitigate potential risks and protect lives and property in the future.
