Recently, there have been frequent earthquakes in the Sichuan and Chongqing regions. Following a 3.0 magnitude earthquake in Shizhu County, Chongqing at 9 p.m. on March 17, and 3.1 and 3.9 magnitude earthquakes in Wenchuan County and Weiyuan County in Sichuan at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on March 18, respectively, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake hit Xuyong County, Sichuan at 7 p.m. on March 24. Many internet users in multiple areas reported feeling the tremors distinctly.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Xuyong County, Luzhou City, Sichuan at 7:21 p.m. on March 24, with a depth of 8 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 28.03 degrees north latitude and 105.18 degrees east longitude. No casualties or damage have been reported so far.
The epicenter is 24 kilometers from Weixin County in Yunnan, 30 kilometers from Xuyong County in Sichuan, 31 kilometers from Xingwen County, 62 kilometers from Gulin County, 65 kilometers from Gong County, 84 kilometers from Bijie City in Guizhou, and 217 kilometers from Chongqing City.
According to the “Hunan Morning News,” many areas in Sichuan including Luzhou, Mianyang, Yibin, and Leshan experienced noticeable tremors. Mr. Lai, who runs a restaurant in Xuyong County, told the reporter of the newspaper that he was cooking when the earthquake occurred. He said, “Around 7 p.m., I was in the store on the first floor, suddenly felt shaking. The whole process didn’t last long, just a few seconds.”
