Should curry rice sauce be placed on the left or right? Japanese netizens vote.

Many people enjoy eating curry rice, but the taste and spiciness of curry, as well as how to pour the sauce over the rice, may vary from person to person. Recently, Japanese netizens have been debating how to pour curry sauce over rice, even going as far as expressing their opinions through voting.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s “Defense Ministry Maritime Self-Defense Force” posted on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) on June 21, discussing the topic of how to eat curry rice. The organization asked netizens, “Which side of the rice do you put your curry sauce on?” and provided four options for everyone to vote on, including “Right Side Camp,” “Left Side Camp,” “Pour it all on Camp,” and “Separate it Camp.”

Eating curry rice seems to also involve different camps, which is clearly an interesting topic. Many netizens shared their thoughts: “What’s the difference between the left and right sides?” “I am right-handed, so I prefer the right side.” “I usually go for the left side, but if I switch to a bowl the next day, I’ll pour it all over.” “Put the rice on the left, pour the sauce, cover with rice, and the plate will be easy to clean.”

Some people also said, “Not just curry, rice should be on the left, and side dishes on the right.” “For some reason, I feel it’s better to place the sauce in front.” Others mentioned the ratio of rice to sauce: “I personally like a 4:6 ratio of rice to curry sauce.”

The voting results showed that out of 4,641 votes, the “Right Side Camp” received 48.5% of the votes, ranking first, indicating that the majority support pouring curry sauce on the right side. The “Left Side Camp” came in second with 30.1% of the votes. The “Pour it all on Camp” received 19.3% of the votes, making it the third-most popular choice, while the “Separate it Camp” received the fewest votes at only 2.2%.

Although people may have different ways of eating curry rice, the health benefits of consuming curry will not vary based on whether you’re in the “Left Side Camp” or “Right Side Camp.”

Previously reported by Dajiyuan, curry is a blend of spices originating from India, including turmeric, chili, cloves, and fennel, among other spices, with many health benefits. Turmeric contains the anti-cancer component curcumin, which is effective in treating lung cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia, as it can inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

In addition, curcumin also has lipid-lowering effects, can enhance insulin sensitivity, and has good health effects for diabetic patients. Curcumin also has a preventative and therapeutic effect on dementia. Studies have found that curcumin can improve cognitive function in Alzheimer’s patients by promoting immune cells to clear plaques in the brain.
