On the evening of July 25th, a sudden power outage incident occurred on the Shenzhen Metro, plunging several stations into darkness. The air conditioning, escalators, and handrails stopped operating, and mobile phones completely lost signal. The incident quickly became a hot topic on Weibo with the hashtag “Shenzhen Metro Power Outage,” sparking discussions among netizens.
According to information shared by netizens online, around 7 p.m. on July 25th, the Shenzhen Metro Line 7 suddenly experienced a power outage. A netizen described the scene as “Bang! Suddenly a power outage! It was pitch black, quite scary.” Additionally, several netizens mentioned that Lines 1, 2, 4, 5, and 12 also experienced power outages temporarily. Due to it happening during rush hour, some netizens described the situation as overcrowded, with one saying, “It’s packed, and the metro is operating like a logistics hub. Stuck inside, can’t even get out.” Some commuters had to “make an extra stop.”
Videos showed that during the power outage, the stations were dark with only a few emergency lights on. Many passengers used their mobile phone flashlights to illuminate the darkness. With the station’s air conditioning not functioning, temperatures inside soared, making it unbearable. Some netizens joked that on Line 4 during the power outage, passengers could enjoy a free “sauna.” There were also complaints about the pervasive body odor in the dark environment.
Moreover, due to the temporary suspension of the network, mobile phones lost signal, leading some netizens to think their phones were malfunctioning. One netizen said, “Thought my phone was broken.”
Another netizen bluntly stated, “Today, Line 1 is full of problems. The handrails, vertical elevators are not working, and there’s no signal for phones directly in the metro station. Card swiping doesn’t work at the Guanshudi station entrance; signal only recovered after passing a few stations.”
Regarding the cause of the subway power outage, some netizens claimed it was due to a power supply trip, while metro staff mentioned on the broadcast that, “Due to a power-off fault, please consider taking other means of transportation.”
According to reports from the Southern Metropolis Daily, information from various sources indicates that the power outage at the stations has been restored, and normal operations have resumed.
