Recently, in the streets of Chicago, a sheep that had broken through a glass window and escaped from a slaughterhouse caused quite a commotion. The sheep was eventually captured by the authorities and temporarily placed in an animal rescue organization. Witnessing its fight for freedom, the organization hopes to give it a chance to live on, which is exactly what the sheep desires.
According to reports from WBBM-TV, on August 11, the sheep ran around in the West Loop and Fulton Market areas of Chicago in an attempt to flee for its life, sparking a several-hour-long commotion. Onlookers used their phones to capture the scene, eager to see what was happening.
Witnesses stated that the sheep had escaped from a slaughterhouse on Halsted Street, with butchers chasing after it. Clearly, the sheep’s actions saved its own life.
Local resident Bobby Grilli expressed his disbelief at seeing the sheep on the street, even witnessing the butchers running after it. The butchers seemed to intentionally hide behind vehicles to covertly approach the sheep.
At one point, the sheep was cornered by staff from the Chicago Animal Care and Control, who then transported it away in their truck.
However, the Chicago Animal Care and Control stated that they did not have adequate space to house livestock such as sheep. Consequently, the sheep was taken to the backyard of the Chicago Chicken Rescue, a non-profit organization located on the South Side.
Christina Zelano, co-founder of the Chicago Chicken Rescue, mentioned that the organization works in partnership with the Chicago Animal Care and Control to house rescued livestock. Additionally, she noted that in the past 15 years, this was the first time a sheep had been brought to their facility.
Zelano described the sheep’s escape, mentioning how it managed to flee from a slaughterhouse in Chicago by breaking through a glass window before wandering the streets.
She noted that the sheep bore markings from the slaughterhouse, confirming its origin. They are currently searching for a new home for the sheep, hoping it can live out its days on a farm with other companions.
Over the next few days, the sheep will reside in the organization’s backyard, which is shared with dozens of chickens and ducks on one side, while the other half will be dedicated to the sheep.
Zelano remarked, “I think it’s quite impressive that this sheep fought for its freedom and escaped. We want to give it a chance to survive, as this is what it desires.”
She also mentioned that she believed the sheep had never been outside before, displaying fear and aloofness.
In a similar incident, a cow escaped from a slaughterhouse in Brooklyn, New York, back in March 2023. Despite being captured by slaughterhouse staff, the cow’s strong will to survive led to the animal shelter agreeing to adopt it, granting it a new lease on life.
