Sharp Drop in Temperature Causes Tens of Thousands of Pounds of Shrimp to Freeze to Death Overnight in Liaoning

On October 9th, the temperature in Panjin, Liaoning Province, dropped suddenly, causing a shrimp farmer to reveal that tens of thousands of pounds of their cultivated Vannamei shrimp froze to death overnight.

Internet users posted videos claiming that on October 9th, the abrupt temperature drop in Yingkou and Panjin cities in Liaoning Province led to the freezing death of some Vannamei shrimp from certain aquaculture farmers. In the video, a farmer lamented, “Over a hundred mu of land, all the shrimp froze to death, sigh, there’s nothing we can do, piles and piles of them.”

The farmer couldn’t help but sigh, “It’s too difficult, aquaculture is too difficult, so many thousands of pounds froze to death, oh dear, it’s heartbreaking, there’s nothing we can do.”

In the video comments, some netizens suggested, “Buy a grinder, fish out the dead shrimp, grind them into powder and mix with some fish meal, give it a cool name like ‘Super Carp Bait’, 300g for 9.9 yuan, guaranteed profit.” “Even frozen shrimp can be sold.”

On the 10th, the aquaculture farmer involved told the Beijing News that the shrimp deaths were due to a sudden temperature drop, and the dead shrimp had been urgently sent to a cold storage for processing, at a “lower price.”

The local government responded, stating that if aquaculture farmers have insurance, they can apply for compensation from the insurance company.
