Shanghai Visiting Residents Trapped at Home by Authorities, Urgently Seeking Help with Food and Medicine

The Chinese Communist Party is about to hold the Fourth Plenary Session, while Shanghai has initiated “stability maintenance” measures. Visiting citizen Yu Zhonghuan has been confined at home by the authorities for 5 days, facing a lack of food and medicine, with his blood pressure soaring to 230mmHg. In a desperate situation, he sent an urgent plea for help to Chen Jining, Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee.

In his plea, Yu Zhonghuan wrote, “I have been trapped for 5 days, running out of medication and food, with blood pressure at 232/136mmHg, posing an extremely high risk. I have not eaten vegetables or fruits for 5 days, suffering from constipation, which could lead to burst blood vessels. My daughter’s medication is also running low, as she suffers from severe hypertension and heart disease.”

“The black security guards surrounding my house receive wages but engage in criminal activities. We, who are exploited and oppressed, should not harm each other at the grassroots level! I believe the mastermind behind this is the Jiangning Road Subdistrict Petition Office of the Jing’an District Government. I implore Secretary Chen Jining to come and save me and my seriously ill daughter!”

Yu Zhonghuan began petitioning due to not receiving relocation and compensation for demolition. His wife died two years ago while fighting for their rights, leaving him and his disabled daughter dependent on each other.

Yu Zhonghuan told a reporter, “My private house in Pudong New Area was forcibly demolished by the district government. Initially, they promised to provide me with housing, but after I presented a property certificate of over 1,200 square meters, they ignored me. The Jinqiao Town government has long been monitoring, suppressing, and persecuting me, my wife, and daughter. This year, the Jiangning Road Subdistrict of the Jing’an District government at my current household registration and residence began the same suppression and persecution!”

Authorities are trying to imprison Yu Zhonghuan covertly. Neighbors have tried to deliver food, but black security guards blocked them, even suggesting neighbors persuade him to go to Chongming Island Black Prison. Four strong security guards stand at his front and back doors, with a seven-seat sedan parked at the community entrance – the same car that took him to the Chongming Island Black Prison last time he was released from detention. They will rush in and take him to the prison as soon as he opens the door.

Today, retired Shanghai teacher and rights activist Gu Guoping and visiting citizen Liu Jiemei visited the besieged Yu Zhonghuan. As they approached the community gate, they saw six burly men running away, prompting Gu Guoping to chase and record the scene on his phone.

Gu Guoping said to a reporter, “Yu Zhonghuan, a rights activist in Shanghai, is currently trapped at home by the Shanghai authorities, unable to go out for shopping or medical treatment. He has reached a point of no return, unable to survive. We hope that netizens will pay attention and spread this message, and urge overseas media to report on this. We also hope that conscientious and responsible urban leaders will take note of this matter!”
