In Shanghai, a restaurant has been making waves online for selling half a chicken for 1999 yuan (Chinese currency).
A Chinese blogger recently posted a video of dining at a restaurant in Shanghai. In the video, a woman asked, “How much does this chicken cost?” to which a staff member replied, “1999 yuan.” The woman then inquired, “Where is this chicken from? Is it a whole chicken?” The staff member explained, “It’s a 365-day Guangdong Qingyuan chicken, but it’s only half.” Additionally, the staff mentioned that the dish also includes fish maw, selected as top-grade by the chef.
According to reports from Jiemu News on August 24, this restaurant is located in the Changning District of Shanghai.
Following the news release, netizens commented, with one saying, “I’m from Qingyuan, my family has about 20 chickens that we’ve raised for over a year, and we don’t sell them for 1999 yuan, just 199 yuan.” Another netizen noted, “I’m from Qingyuan too, and a local Qingyuan chicken sells for 48 yuan, which is already considered expensive.”
Some netizens conveyed, “It’s not about the cost of the chicken itself, but the price of eating this chicken here.”
Others mentioned, “As long as the price is clear and there’s no price deception, there shouldn’t be any issue!”
A staff member from the restaurant informed the media that the dish not only contains chicken but is actually a stew with chicken and fish maw. In response to the online discussions, the staff member mentioned that they will verify which blogger did the promotion and make necessary adjustments to avoid misunderstandings.
