Shanghai activist Wang Kuoma jailed twice in staged cases, mistreatment leads to inability to care for himself

In recent news, the heartbreaking story of Teng Jindi and her son Wang Kouma has attracted public attention. Teng Jindi died in a black prison while fighting for her rights, and her son Wang Kouma was wrongfully imprisoned twice for alleged abandonment charges. During his time in prison, he was persecuted, leading to two instances of strokes. In his efforts to uncover the truth behind his mother’s death, Wang Kouma faced further suppression and suffered two more strokes, leaving him unable to care for himself.

Wang Kouma’s wife, Yao Minhua, has spoken out, stating that Wang Kouma has lost all ability to care for himself, and the local government has turned a blind eye to his medical condition now that he is unable to advocate for his rights. The monthly medical expenses amount to nearly fifteen thousand yuan, a burden the family can no longer afford.

Yao Minhua expressed to a reporter, “Wang Kouma suffered two strokes due to persecution during his wrongful imprisonments, with the hospital issuing critical condition notices multiple times. Faced with repeated persecutions from the local government, Wang Kouma experienced strokes in 2017 and 2024, resulting in a debilitating stroke, leaving him unable to care for himself, permanently disabled.”

Yao Minhua is seeking media attention for Wang Kouma’s situation and urging the Shanghai authorities to address his medical needs.

In 2007, Teng Jindi, residing at 17 Lane 427, Qipu Road, Zhabei District, Shanghai, was subjected to forced demolition due to urban redevelopment. Without signing any agreement, Teng Jindi’s house was illegally demolished and she was not properly relocated. Outraged by the unjust relocation, the 85-year-old Teng Jindi embarked on the path of seeking justice.

On January 5, 2008, Wang Kouma and his mother Teng Jindi went to the Shanghai Municipal Government Petition Office to plea their case. While at the office, Teng Jindi and Wang Kouma were deliberately separated by the staff, leading to Teng Jindi being taken to the People’s Square Public Security Office and then handed over to the Beizhan Street Comprehensive Management Office of Zhabei District Government, where she was detained in the black prison “Youfang Bathroom.”

After being unlawfully detained at the “Youfang Bathroom” for over 80 days, Teng Jindi passed away suddenly.

Six months later, Wang Kouma traveled to Beijing to seek justice for his mother, visiting the Ministry of Public Security’s Petition Office and the National Petition Bureau. However, he was intercepted and retaliated against by the authorities, charged with “abandonment crime,” and sentenced to one year and six months in prison. During his imprisonment, he was persecuted, leading to a stroke and disability.

On January 5, 2012, Wang Kouma conducted a memorial ceremony for his mother in the alley of the “Youfang Bathroom” in the black prison. With prior approval from the deputy director of the Beizhan Police Station, Xu Deqing, a police cordon was established, and the memorial proceeded under the unified command of the police officer Xu Deqing in an orderly manner.

However, nine months later, Wang Kouma was arrested by the authorities on charges of “provocation” for his actions on January 5 during the memorial ceremony for his mother. He was sentenced to two years and six months in prison by the Zhabei District Court in Shanghai.

Unwavering in his quest for justice for his mother, Wang Kouma continued to seek the truth. On April 23, 2019, he applied for information disclosure from the Jing’an Branch of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau, requesting access to and the public release of the autopsy report, photos, videos, and other evidence related to Teng Jindi’s death signed by the forensic doctor of the Criminal Investigation Detachment of the original Zhabei Sub-Bureau on January 5, 2008.

Upon receiving the autopsy materials of Teng Jindi on May 14, 2019, Wang Kouma witnessed the horrifying condition his mother was in before her death, covered in bruises and wounds. The photos revealed bruising around her neck, two obvious puncture wounds inflicted by a hard object, extensive bruising on her ribcage, a long knife-like wound on her back, and numerous scars on her hands and fingers.

Upon viewing these images, Wang Kouma realized that his mother had been brutally beaten to death by dark forces or through unspeakable means, prompting a rushed cremation of her body. He was wrongfully accused of abandonment, bearing the blame for Teng Jindi’s death.

Yao Minhua stated, “Countless petitioners have been kidnapped, imprisoned, beaten, tortured, poisoned, killed, and maimed by the petition and public security departments, and the judicial system refuses to take any action, instilling extreme fear and despair! What’s even more terrifying and hopeless is that the Chinese government, the judiciary, and law enforcement are all failing in this extremely vicious case, creating despair among the Chinese people.”
