Shanghai, September 20, 2025 (Epoch Times Reporter Hong Ning reporting): 95-year-old disabled elderly woman Liu Shuzhen’s house was forcibly demolished 20 years ago in Shanghai, and she has not received any compensation or resettlement since. Over the years, she has been tirelessly advocating for her rights, but has faced repeated suppression. Recently, Liu Shuzhen once again publicly protested for her rights in the park, only to be forcibly taken away by five or six police officers.
On the morning of September 3, Liu Shuzhen protested for her rights by holding a sign in People’s Park in Shanghai, but was immediately stopped by five or six police officers from the Shanghai Huangpu Second Detachment of the Public Security Bureau, and was forcibly taken to the local police station.
Liu’s daughter, Cui Fufang, told Epoch Times that the issue is simple, but the local government is unwilling to resolve the forced demolition issue. It has been over twenty years, and there is still no intention to return the house, her mother just wants her house back.
Liu Shuzhen’s original house was located on Shangnan Road in Pudong New Area of Shanghai, which was her private property. The rights protection movement dates back to 2005 when the Shanghai municipal government demolished her property for the 2010 World Expo without providing compensation or relocation until now.
“We are not asking for something extra from them (the government), we just want our own things back,” Cui Fufang said. The government claims they have no money, but they must have money because the developers had already given the compensation for relocation to the government, which was then confiscated.
For over 20 years, Liu Shuzhen has been living in a small room in a hotel at Pudong Nan Matou. Her sole focus in life has been fighting for her rights, showing up at the plaza in front of the Shanghai municipal government every Wednesday with a sign to voice her demands.
Cui Fufang said her mother, despite being ill, has been advocating relentlessly with no results, and has been arrested or put under surveillance multiple times. Authorities have been closely monitoring the elderly woman, demanding reports on everything, severely affecting her normal life.
Cui Fufang stressed, “It was the government who demolished our house, so they should bear the corresponding responsibility and return what rightfully belongs to us.”
On July 28th this year, Liu Shuzhen was taken to the Zhoudadi Police Station in Pudong New Area of Shanghai after being intercepted at Beijing Railway Station, where she was kept under surveillance for over a month. Feeling forced and helpless, the elderly woman once again held up a protest sign.
Cui Fufang mentioned that her mother is 95 years old, and her only wish is to return to her own home during her lifetime.
“The local government keeps delaying, acting like thugs and scoundrels who wish for your demise. A 95-year-old woman fighting for rights, such a rare sight in the world. While others enjoy their golden years, we are fighting tirelessly to reclaim our property. How can the government expect people to respect them?” Cui Fufang questioned.
Cui Fufang expressed that a 95-year-old woman fighting for her rights for two decades without success reflects systemic flaws and the helplessness of the people. “The ordinary people will surely persist in seeking to reclaim their property and will not give up.”
