Recently, in Weinan Pucheng County Vocational Education Center in Shaanxi Province, a 17-year-old boy fell to his death, with official reports stating it was a suicide. However, some internet users revealed that the boy had been a victim of campus bullying and was pushed off. The official report has sparked doubts online.
According to multiple posts by the boy’s mother on social media, her child’s name was Dang Changxin, and he was studying in a high school (boarding school) at the Weinan Pucheng County Vocational Education Center. On the afternoon of December 29, 2024, Dang Changxin went to school happily. However, at 3 a.m. on January 2, his mother received a call from his homeroom teacher, informing her of an urgent situation at school and asking her to come. Upon reaching the school, she couldn’t find her child, and when she asked classmates, they nervously claimed ignorance and quickly left.
Subsequently, Dang Changxin’s mother was taken by a teacher to a room in the school and was not allowed to leave. She said, “I stood up from the chair, and the teacher immediately asked me to sit down and not move.”
Dang Changxin’s mother anxiously inquired about her child’s whereabouts, but the teacher only asked her to wait. It wasn’t until after 7 a.m. on the 2nd that the deputy director of the local police station informed her that her child had jumped off a building and died. He said, “We have investigated and confirmed that he jumped of his own accord.”
Dang Changxin’s mother said, “Upon hearing this, I was stunned; I couldn’t believe my ears, my legs went weak.” She wanted to see her child but was taken to a hotel opposite the school, where she was monitored by two teachers in shifts until she was directly taken to the funeral home at 4 p.m. that day.
“My child was neatly dressed, no injuries on his face or head, lots of bruises under his neck. We wanted to check if there were other injuries under his clothes, but more than ten teachers prevented us from looking and prohibited taking pictures. We hurriedly saw him once and were then kicked out,” she said. “He is my child, why can’t I see him?”
Dang Changxin’s mother also mentioned, “All the personal belongings of those who knew, such as phones, watches, were confiscated, photos in the phones were all deleted, and there were obvious signs of a fight in the dormitory.”
Dang Changxin’s uncle, reposting Dang Changxin’s mother’s post, said that Dang Changxin’s mother had posted many videos on Douyin (Chinese version of TikTok), but they were all restricted.
Three days after the incident on January 5, the Pucheng County Joint Investigation Team reported that around 3 a.m. on the 2nd, a student fell from a building at the new campus of the Pucheng County Vocational Education Center, and when the emergency services arrived, the person showed no signs of life. “After conducting an on-site investigation, reviewing surveillance footage, conducting interviews, and autopsy examination, the police determined that the student died from falling from a height, and currently, criminal activity is ruled out.”
The report also stated that around 10 p.m. on January 1, Dang Changxin was in a dispute with Guo (a freshman student) and X (a fellow villager of Guo) in the dormitory on the 4th floor due to their chat disturbing his rest. An argument and physical conflict ensued with Guo. Later, accompanied by Chen (a student council member), Dang Changxin informed the Deputy Principal of the Political and Educational Department, Lei. After mediation by Lei, Guo and Dang Changxin were called to the duty office, and after returning to the dormitory, around 3 a.m. on the 2nd, when Huang, who shared the dormitory with Dang Changxin, went to the toilet, he found a wooden stool placed below the balcony window of the dormitory. The pushed-pull window was open, the reinforced metal mesh was dismantled, and Dang Changxin was lying outside the window.
However, according to a post by an insider on the internet, “I want to reveal the whole process, the freshmen and seniors teamed up to beat him, and pushed him down, and this wasn’t the first time they bullied him. The school, the education bureau, and the police station are trying to cover it up. The principal has good connections, and the surveillance cameras could not have malfunctioned.”
A netizen posted, “The kid who pushed the boy downstairs said he’s not afraid of death since his father will protect him.” Another commenter replied, “Yes, my child’s friend also posted about it.”
The news sparked heated discussions online. Many internet users commented, “It’s too terrifying; how did he fall without head injuries?” “It’s not simple; after watching several videos showing no signs of fall injuries but bruises on the neck, they didn’t allow a thorough inspection, swiftly cremated!” “What happened in between?” “Why aren’t parents allowed to see the child!?” “Why not report why so many teachers are watching the family in the hotel, not letting parents see for so long.”
“About the child’s bruises, what’s the story there? No head injuries, did someone push him or did he jump himself, were the teachers fair and just in handling the dispute, did they inform parents? After all, the physical conflict wasn’t just verbal altercation, did they take both sides to the hospital for a check-up, or did they end it with a punishment?”
Some questioned, “Weren’t the surveillance cameras supposed to be broken? How were they able to review the footage?” “Official reports, are you speaking human language?” “So dark.” “The incident was covered up like this; doesn’t this mean that in the future, as long as you have money, you can cover things up in schools.”
