Senior Chinese Communist Party official Wu Cunrong transferred to judiciary for suspected massive corruption.

A high-ranking official of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and former Chairman of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Wu Cunrong, has been transferred to judicial authorities for alleged involvement in massive corruption. Wu Cunrong fell from power in December last year while serving in his official capacity.

According to a report released on June 5th by the CCP Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission, Wu Cunrong, former Party Secretary and Chairman of the CPPCC in Shanxi Province, has been subjected to disciplinary actions and transferred to the judicial system.

The report stated that Wu Cunrong promoted irregular fundraising through debt financing, illegally accepted gifts, received entertainment that could affect the impartial execution of public duties, allowed others to cover expenses that should have been personally paid, failed to truthfully address issues during organizational discussions and inquiries, indulged and condoned his relatives in profiting from his official influence, treating public power as a tool for personal gain, engaging in power-for-money transactions, exploiting his position for the benefit of others in planning approvals, changes in land use, and business operations for personal gain, and knowingly accepting massive illicit financial gains.

On December 16th last year, the CCP officially announced that Wu Cunrong was under investigation while in office. On December 24th, he was relieved of his position as Chairman of the 13th Shanxi Provincial Committee of the CPPCC and his membership status was revoked. On the same day, Wu’s membership in the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference was also revoked.

Public records show that Wu Cunrong was born in May 1963 in Wuhu, Anhui Province. He previously held positions such as Director of the Anhui Provincial Department of Water Resources, Mayor of Hefei, Anhui Provincial Committee Member and Secretary of the Hefei Municipal Committee. He was promoted to the position of Member of the Standing Committee of the Anhui Provincial Committee and Executive Vice Governor of Anhui Province in 2011.

In 2017, Wu Cunrong was transferred to Chongqing, where he served as a Member of the Standing Committee and Executive Vice Mayor of the Municipal Committee. In 2021, he became the Deputy Secretary of the Chongqing Municipal Committee, and in 2022, he held the positions of Deputy Director and Deputy Secretary of the Party Group of the Standing Committee of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Congress.

In January 2023, Wu Cunrong was reassigned to the positions of Party Secretary and Chairman of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the CPPCC until his investigation.

It is worth noting that in April of this year, another provincial-level official in Shanxi was investigated while in office.

According to a report from the CCP Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission on April 12th, Jin Xiangjun, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Governor of Shanxi, was placed under investigation.

As reported by mainland Chinese media, Jin Xiangjun was taken away for questioning at his residence in Taiyuan, Shanxi, on the evening of April 10th. Earlier that day, he had chaired a regular meeting of the Shanxi Provincial Government.

Jin Xiangjun is the first provincial governor to be investigated while in office since the 19th National Congress of the CCP and the 15th senior official to fall from grace since 2025.
