Seeking Justice in the Haze: Sun Derong Faces Death Threats

Chinese male star Yu Menglong tragically fell to his death on September 11, leaving behind a mystery surrounding his passing. His mentor and veteran Taiwanese talent agent, Sun Derong, has faced threats and intimidation for continuously advocating for justice for Yu Menglong, being warned that Taiwan’s National Day, also known as Double Tenth Day, would be his “deadline.” In response, on October 25, Sun Derong reassured his safety on social media and defiantly challenged, “I am looking forward to see how they plan to make me die!”

The cause of Yu Menglong’s death remains shrouded in mystery. Sun Derong, unable to bear the tragic loss of his beloved disciple, sought justice for Yu Menglong at the Xinzhuang Dizang Temple in Taiwan on September 29. Furthermore, on October 17, Sun Derong organized a Buddhist ritual for Yu Menglong, which attracted a large gathering of fans who showed their support. The online live stream of the event attracted tens of thousands of viewers.

During the ritual, elaborate paper replicas of a mansion, car, tablet, and piano were prepared for Yu Menglong, along with the burning of 360 million ghost money. Sun Derong expressed his hope that Yu Menglong would find happiness in the Western Pure Land, free from any lingering obstacles.

Outside the venue of the ritual, fans were astonished to witness a rainbow suddenly appear in the clear sky, enveloping the area, followed by a massive cloud formation resembling a fish.

After the news spread, netizens expressed their thoughts, with comments such as “Menglong must be watching,” and “The fish has really come! It’s the first time I’ve seen a rainbow on a sunny day! Even the clouds forming a fish shape are truly incredible! Too amazing!” and “Clear skies reveal a rainbow, injustice will be avenged, and the truth will come to light.”

However, Sun Derong’s relentless advocacy for Yu Menglong has led to death threats. Recently, a viral video on the Chinese video-sharing platform Douyin circulated a death threat directed at Sun Derong, foretelling his demise on October 25.

On October 25, Sun Derong posted on Facebook to reassure everyone, stating, “Today is Taiwan’s National Day, a day of national celebration. I have been cursed that October 25 will be my deadline.”

In response, he declared, “I am eager to see how they plan to make me die!” To ease everyone’s concerns, Sun Derong assured that he would update everyone daily on his well-being.

In addition to Sun Derong, netizens have initiated a global petition through the international non-governmental organization Avaaz, titled “Seeking Justice for Yu Menglong.” As of October 27, over 690,000 people have signed the petition.

Recently, large outdoor LED screens in major shopping malls across China have displayed memorial activities, featuring silent scenes as a form of silent protest against the Chinese authorities.

In response to these events, veteran media personality and host of “Crossroads of the World,” Tang Hao, expressed to Dajiyuan that Yu Menglong has over 20 million fans. When people witness a celebrity’s gruesome death without clarity on the truth, it raises concerns about the lack of social justice and security, sparking fear of “could this happen to me one day.”

He emphasized that compared to past social cases like the Iron Chain Girl and Hu Xinyu, as an idol, Yu Menglong’s victimhood is more relatable to his fans, compelling them to demand full accountability.
