Republican National Convention Declares Trump as Presidential Nominee

Former President Trump officially became the Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election on Monday, July 15. During the Republican National Convention held on that day, he secured the necessary delegate votes to be the nominee.

It was not surprising that Trump received the nomination on Monday, as he has been the presumed nominee for several months. The delegate votes at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin officially confirmed his status as the nominee.

This marks Trump’s third consecutive presidential nomination by the Republican Party. He won the election in 2016, lost the presidency in 2020, and is once again leading the Republican charge for White House control in 2024, expected to face his old rival Biden once more.

Unlike in 2020, Trump faced challenges from several party rivals in this presidential race, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who was ranked second in the primaries before withdrawing from the race. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, ranked third in the primaries, did not immediately endorse Trump after dropping out but announced her support for him in late May, over two months later.

Trump has already consolidated support within the party after easily defeating his challengers.

A significant legal victory came for Trump on July 1 with a Supreme Court ruling. The justices determined that Trump is immune from criminal prosecution for his official acts as president, delaying the trials for several other criminal cases he is facing and paving the way for his upcoming campaign.

On Monday, just hours before the opening of the Republican National Convention, the federal judge overseeing the Trump confidential documents case dismissed the suit due to issues with the appointment of the special prosecutor, marking another major legal win for Trump.

Over the weekend, Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, eliciting a surge of support for him. Less than 48 hours after the attack, the Republican National Convention officially announced Trump as the presidential nominee for 2024.
