On Monday, former President Donald Trump officially became the Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election in the United States. This announcement came during the Republican National Convention where he secured the necessary delegate votes.
Trump’s nomination on Monday was not surprising as he has been the presumed Republican nominee for several months. The delegate votes at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin officially solidified his nomination.
This marks Trump’s third consecutive nomination as the Republican presidential candidate. He won the election in 2016, lost the presidency in 2020, and now emerges once again as the Republican contender for White House control in 2024, expected to face his old rival Joe Biden once more.
Unlike in 2020, Trump faced challenges from several internal party competitors in this presidential race. This included Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who ranked second in the primaries before withdrawing from the race. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley ranked third in the primaries but did not immediately endorse Trump after dropping out. It wasn’t until late May, over two months later, that she announced her support for Trump.
After easily defeating his challengers, Trump has successfully rallied support within the party.
A significant legal victory for Trump came on July 1 with a Supreme Court ruling granting him immunity from criminal prosecution for his official actions as President. This decision delayed several pending criminal cases against him, clearing the path for his upcoming campaign.
Just hours before the start of the Republican National Convention, the federal judge overseeing Trump’s case involving classified documents dismissed the charges due to concerns about the appointment of the special prosecutor, marking another major legal win for Trump.
Last Saturday evening, Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Following the attack, more voices of support for him emerged. Less than 48 hours after the incident, the Republican National Convention officially declared Trump as the party’s nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
