Renowned Power Bank Brand Romoss Banned by Multiple Beijing Universities

Recent events involving the ban on the use of ROMOSS power banks from Shenzhen by several Beijing universities have sparked widespread attention, leading to an official apology from ROMOSS.

The ROMOSS power banks were suspected of being prone to “explosions,” leading to their ban in several universities in Beijing. According to reports from various mainland Chinese media outlets such as Yangtze Evening News, students from multiple Beijing universities posted online claiming that the security department had issued a notice saying that 20,000 mAh ROMOSS brand chargers were more likely to explode during charging compared to chargers of other brands and models. Those in possession of these chargers were advised to immediately discard them to prevent any potential danger.

Staff members from the student affairs office at Beijing United University stated that there had been incidents of self-ignition involving the same brand and model of power banks among students recently. The probability of self-ignition of this particular model was relatively high, with the 119 Fire Department also providing warnings and advice to the university. Additionally, there were similar cases of self-ignition with the same brand and model of power banks at the Communication University of Beijing.

Personnel from the security department at Geng Dan College of Beijing University of Technology mentioned that they received safety alerts from the municipal education commission.

Officials from the Beijing Municipal Education Commission responded, stating that universities have the autonomy to manage themselves, and regulations generally do not specify the types of power banks or plugs. These regulations are usually part of the school’s rules or safety management guidelines.

On online shopping platforms, it can be seen that the 20,000 mAh ROMOSS power bank is among the top-selling mobile power sources, priced at around 100 Chinese Yuan with good sales figures.

However, on social media platforms, many users have reported cases of swelling after using chargers from the same brand.

Public information indicates that ROMOSS power banks are one of the more well-known brands in the domestic market. The brand is under the umbrella of Shenzhen ROMOSS Technology Co., Ltd., established in Shenzhen in 2012, specializing in the research and production of mobile power sources, outdoor power sources, data charging cables, power adapters, car chargers, and other 3C digital peripheral products.

ROMOSS released a statement saying: “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to teachers, students, and the public regarding the recent discussion on the ‘ban on ROMOSS power banks by several Beijing universities.’ We solemnly pledge that we will take full legal responsibility for any ROMOSS products deemed defective by authoritative agencies.”

The statement also mentioned that they had initiated an immediate investigation, communicated with relevant departments such as the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, and as of the time of the announcement, had not received any risk notification from the Beijing Municipal Education Commission.
