Reminder: Free New Jersey Subway Week Starts Today.

Residents in New York and New Jersey, please take note: starting today (August 26th), all buses and trains operated by New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) will be free for a week until next Monday, September 2nd (including September 2nd), and normal fares will resume starting from September 3rd. Residents looking to explore the area are encouraged to take full advantage of this free week, while monthly commuters will enjoy a 25% discount next month.

Earlier, Governor Phil Murphy announced that as an apology for recent service delays and as a thank you to both new and loyal customers, New Jersey’s transportation system will be completely free from August 26th to September 2nd. This means passengers can travel without needing to purchase or show tickets during this week.

According to the official website of NJ Transit, the free ticket promotion includes “all” NJ Transit buses, trains, light rail, Access Link tickets, as well as Northern Rail line trains operated by NJ Transit, and all bus routes outsourced by NJ Transit in Bergen, Middlesex, Passaic, and Union Counties within New Jersey.

However, the holiday fare plan does not apply to privately operated buses accepting NJ Transit tickets, such as Broadway buses.

For a complete list of bus routes covered by the holiday fare, please visit: https://www.njtransit.com/bus-to

Please note that PATH and PATCO trains connecting the two states are not part of the fare holiday. Additionally, the AirTrain at Newark Liberty International Airport is not included in the fare holiday, requiring passengers to purchase appropriate tickets at the airport train station before boarding the AirTrain to travel between terminals.

Passengers who usually purchase joint tickets from third parties (such as SEPTA or ferry services) are still responsible for purchasing the non-New Jersey portion of the fare.

Passengers transferring at the Trenton Transit Center to travel on SEPTA must purchase SEPTA tickets at NJ Transit ticket machines or ticket offices.
