Relentless downpours in Guangdong as orange and yellow alerts continue.

Recently, southern China has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall, with Guangdong province facing the most severe impact. On May 5th, Guangdong issued one orange rainstorm warning and 15 yellow rainstorm warnings. The day before, Guangdong had issued a total of 139 rainstorm warnings.

According to meteorological hydrological monitoring data, from 8:00 on the 4th to 8:00 on the 5th, the average rainfall in Guangdong province was 49.3 millimeters. There were 10 towns recording over 250 millimeters of torrential rain, 151 towns recording between 100 to 250 millimeters of heavy rain, and 554 towns recording between 50 to 100 millimeters of rain. The highest accumulated rainfall occurred in Tanzhou Town, Zhongshan, with 400.1 millimeters; and the highest hourly rainfall was recorded in Zhupai Village, Shenwan Town, Zhongshan, at 141.9 millimeters.

Currently, the rain belt has affected areas such as Heyuan, Meizhou, Huizhou, and Shanwei. As it moves eastward, Jieyang, Shantou, and Chaozhou are expected to experience rainfall. As of 6:41 on the 5th, Guangdong had one orange rainstorm warning, 15 yellow rainstorm warnings, and 30 yellow thunderstorm warnings in effect.

From the afternoon to night of May 5th, Shaoguan, Heyuan, Meizhou, and the northern Pearl River Delta region will experience moderate to locally heavy rain.

The latest round of heavy rainfall in Guangdong started on May 3rd, with the peak intensity reached on the 4th. Rainfall was widespread, affecting cities like Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Yangjiang, Jiangmen, Shenzhen, and Maoming. On that day, Guangdong issued a total of 139 rainstorm warning signals, including 14 red alerts, 42 orange alerts, 83 yellow alerts, and an additional 24 yellow thunderstorm warnings.

The Beijing Daily described Guangdong’s current rainfall as “widespread rainwater spread out,” while the Guangzhou Daily titled their report “The sky above the Pearl River Estuary is like turning on a tap.”

Videos circulating on Weibo show severe flooding in Zhuhai due to continuous heavy rainfall, with water reaching heights that lift cars. A woman is seen opening her car’s sunroof, standing with an umbrella protruding out of it. Additionally, a massive waterfall is observed at the back of the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Zhongshan.
