Rare Heavy Rainfall and Flooding in Meizhou, Guangdong, at Least 9 Dead and 6 Missing

Recently, several areas in Meizhou, Guangdong, have been hit by rare torrential rain and flooding, with Meixian District and Jiaoling County suffering severely. Local reports state that at least 9 people have died, and 6 are missing. Due to the Chinese Communist Party’s propensity for concealing information, the actual numbers of casualties could be more severe.

According to reports from mainland Chinese media on June 20th, from the night of the 15th to the 16th, heavy rain and even extremely heavy rain occurred in the northern part of Meizhou City, leading to flash floods and landslides in Meizhou, Jiaoling County, Pingyuan County, and other areas.

The main water system in Meizhou, the “Han River Basin,” experienced the largest flood in history. When the flood peak passed, the water level approached the height of three floors, causing numerous villages to be cut off from external transportation, resembling isolated islands.

According to CCTV news reports by the Chinese Communist Party, as of the 17th, a total of 164,634 people in Meizhou were affected, with 1,436 houses collapsing, resulting in at least 5 deaths, 15 missing persons, and 13 trapped individuals.

Jiaoling County of Meizhou was one of the hardest-hit areas. From 8 a.m. on the 16th to 7 a.m. on the 17th, Jiaoling County experienced heavy rain and locally extremely heavy rain, with an average rainfall of 188.4 millimeters throughout the county and the highest rainfall in Guangfu Town at 341.4 millimeters.

The Stone Cave River and Songyuan River witnessed the largest floods recorded, leading to severe damage in seven townships including Jiaocheng, Xinpu, Changtan, Sanzun, Wenfu, Guangfu, and Nanqi.

By 4 p.m. on the 20th, Jiaoling County had 64,947 affected individuals, resulting in 5 deaths and 2 missing persons, with an estimated direct economic loss of approximately 3.65 billion yuan.

Meixian District of Meizhou was also severely affected. According to the flood control office in Meixian District, the rainfall in Meixian District has been 76% higher than the same period in a typical year since the beginning of the flood season.

Especially on June 16th, due to intense regional short-term heavy rains, extremely heavy rains in upstream areas, and flood discharge impacts, the Stone Cave River experienced a flood that occurs once every century, while the Songyuan River saw its largest flood in recorded history, triggering natural disasters such as mudslides in seven severely affected townships including Songyuan, Taoyao, Baidu, Songkou, Bencun, Yanyang, and Longwen.

Preliminary statistics show that 32,083 people in Meixian District were affected, with 5,871 houses collapsing or damaged, over 1,586 hectares of crops affected, 83.28 kilometers of roads damaged, 40 bridges destroyed, and 28.6 kilometers of embankments damaged, resulting in an estimated direct economic loss of about 1.063 billion yuan.

By 4 p.m. on the 20th, the disaster had caused 4 deaths and 4 missing persons. Due to the CCP’s tendency to conceal information, the actual number of casualties in various regions may be more severe than officially reported.

Currently, the heavy rainfall in Meizhou has temporarily subsided, and local residents have begun to clean up and repair their homes.

Jiaoling County of Meizhou remains a “severely affected area” from the recent heavy rain, with visible traces of the flood even after the waters have receded.

Roads in Xinpu Town of Jiaoling County are still muddy and messy, with piles of items soaked by floodwaters lining both sides of the main road, Jinfeng Road.

In low-lying areas of Fuling Village in Xinpu Town, many buildings bear marks where floodwaters rose to the rooftops, reaching heights of three to four meters. The area is covered in mud waiting to be cleared out, with power lines askew and severe house collapses.

Local residents are rushing to clean up and repair their homes before the next wave of heavy rain hits.
