Recently, Pompton Plains, a charming village just a 45-minute drive from Manhattan, has been selected as the seventh most livable retirement town in the United States, attracting nationwide attention.
This selection was made by the personal finance and economics information website GOBankingRates based on various indicators such as affordability, safety, and convenience of living, and the conclusion was drawn by cross-referencing the proportion of elderly population, as well as consulting the “Livability Index” from the life quality and community assessment website AreaVibes.
Pompton Plains scored a livability rating of 79 points, ranking seventh nationally; the proportion of elderly population is approximately 34.7%, indicating a solid retirement community foundation; the median household income is around $113,660, reflecting local economic stability; and the average housing price is approximately $585,000, offering a price advantage compared to the overall New York metropolitan area.
Pompton Plains is part of Pequannock Township with a population of about 11,144 people as of 2020. The small village is located in the Pompton River Valley with easy access via New Jersey Route 23 and Interstate 287.
The non-profit emergency community hospital, Chilton Medical Center, with 260 beds, is situated in the village and is a medical facility awarded an “A” safety grade by Leapfrog. This provides convenience for retired residents seeking medical care.
The community is scattered with parks, equestrian centers, golf courses, and shops, offering residents opportunities for leisure and daily necessities within the local area.
Pompton Plains is the only town in the tri-state area to make it into the top 10. There are two Garden State towns in the top 50, with Ocean City, New Jersey, ranked 12th.
