In order to preserve the local traditional hunting customs, Kyrgyzstan holds a unique hunting festival each spring and autumn to showcase the rich heritage of nomadic hunting culture. During this festival, talented athletes from various regions of Kyrgyzstan and cultural inheritors of steppe hunting traditions gather together to recreate the exciting traditional hunting scenes for local residents and foreign tourists.
The hunting activities, mainly featuring bird of prey hunting, hound hunting, and horseback archery, are known locally as “Salburun,” which can be translated from Kyrgyz as “hunting pleasure.” The origins of “Salburun” stem from the traditional practices of nomadic tribes in hunting to protect their herds from predators like wolves and has now been included in the World Nomad Games competition events.
The festival reaches its climax with segments such as “Falconry Display” and “Hound Assessment,” where eagles and falcons soar effortlessly in the hands of falconers, showcasing their powerful hunting abilities. Particularly, the Taigan, a unique Kyrgyz hunting dog known for its endurance at high altitudes, demonstrates swift hunting skills. Finally, the organizers select the best Taigan hound nationwide based on agility, static form, and bloodline.
In the exhibition and experience area, visitors can learn about nomadic life through real artifacts, view various hunting tools, unique handicrafts, and even have the opportunity to interact closely with falcons and hunting dogs. It is reported that the captivating hunting festival activities each year leave the audience wanting more, eagerly anticipating the next edition.
The festival is organized by the “Salburun” Association, established in 2006. Previous “Salburun” festivals were mainly held in the form of internal competitions with limited external promotion. However, starting from 2024, the festival has expanded to include cultural performances, folk displays, handicraft exhibitions, showcasing the distinctive features of Kyrgyz culture.
Currently, the organizers are working towards making the “Salburun” traditional hunting festival an annual grand event, scheduled on the first Saturday of August each year to allow global tourists to plan their trips well in advance.
