In Peru, a journalist’s home was targeted with a thrown ignited explosive device at night, but luckily their pet dog acted heroically by rushing towards the explosive and miraculously managed to extinguish the fuse with its mouth, saving the lives of the journalist’s family. This brave act led the dog to be hailed as a “hero.”
According to a report by the New York Post on September 8th, a suspicious man wearing black approached the home of Peruvian journalist Carlos Alberto Mesias Zarate and threw the burning explosive into the house before quickly fleeing. This incident was captured by surveillance cameras.
At the time of the incident, Zarate’s mixed-breed dog named Machis, weighing only 25 pounds (11.3 kilograms), immediately ran downstairs and towards the location of the explosive. Initially, Machis used its paws to toy with the fuse, eventually putting it in its mouth to extinguish it.
Authorities later determined that the explosive device used was of landmine grade. Zarate told local media, “It kept biting and biting, saving our lives.”
Zarate reported the attempted explosion to the authorities immediately, leading to the arrest of a suspect. While his family emerged unharmed, Machis was not as fortunate.
It was discovered that Machis suffered damage to its vocal cords from the incident, transforming its once loud bark into a hoarse whisper. Zarate remarked, “You can no longer hear its voice.”
Despite this, Machis continued to remain active in the public eye and has now become a somewhat famous figure.
Stories of loyal dogs protecting their owners are not uncommon, as seen in an incident in Switzerland in July this year. A man hiking with his Chihuahua on the Fee Glacier in southern Switzerland accidentally fell 26 feet (7.9 meters) into a crevasse. Fortunately, the small dog stayed put, assisting the rescue team in a helicopter to locate him and ultimately save him.
The rescue team from Air Zermatt airline stated that the man fell into the crevasse while stepping on a snow bridge. He used an amateur radio he carried to make a distress call, which was picked up by someone nearby but without confirmation of his exact location.
Upon receiving the alert, the company dispatched a helicopter carrying rescue personnel to the scene. However, the broad surface of the glacier made it difficult to identify the crevasse.
At a critical moment, a rescue team member noticed some movement on a rock – it was the small dog! Next to it was the collapsed crevasse where the man had fallen.
Thanks to the dog’s quick response, the rescue team accurately pinpointed the accident site. They then descended via ropes to the man, successfully extracting him and airlifting him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The rescue team commended the dog for staying still throughout the entire rescue process, closely following every move of the rescuers. Its actions were deemed crucial to the success of the rescue operation.
The rescue team praised, “This four-legged hero likely saved its owner’s life in a critical moment.”
