Pentagon: To Deploy Thousands of Troops to the Middle East to Prevent Escalation

The conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon continues to escalate, prompting the United States to once again deploy troops to the Middle East region for reinforcement. The U.S is determined to prevent Iran and its supported partners and proxies from exploiting the current situation to widen the conflict.

According to reports from the Associated Press, the Pentagon announced on Monday (September 30) that the United States will be sending “thousands” of troops to the Middle East to enhance security and defend Israel when necessary. This decision comes after Israel conducted limited airstrikes into Lebanon.

The additional troops will increase the total military presence in the region from 40,000 to as many as 43,000. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh informed reporters that the reinforcements will come from multiple fighter squadrons.

In a statement released by the Pentagon on Sunday (September 29), Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin emphasized the priority of protecting American citizens and military personnel in the region, defending Israel, and working towards de-escalation through deterrence and diplomatic means.

Austin underscored the U.S’s commitment to preventing Iran and its partners from escalating the conflict using the current situation. He explicitly stated that any attacks on U.S personnel or interests in the region will be met with necessary measures to protect American citizens.

The Pentagon disclosed that the Defense Secretary has instructed the temporary extension of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group’s mission in the region. According to a U.S official cited by the Associated Press, the extension is expected to last about a month.

The statement further revealed that the USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group and the Marine Expeditionary Unit will continue their missions in the Eastern Mediterranean. This maritime deployment is supported by a robust air force including various advanced fighter jets like F-22, F-15E, F-16, and A-10.

The Pentagon stated that in the coming days, there will be additional enhancement of defensive air support capabilities.

President Biden reiterated his strong call on Monday for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
